UCI product vying
Janelly Farias, who played one season for the UC Irvine women’s soccer team and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Anteaters last season, is representing Mexico in the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship tournament that begins Wednesday in Texas.
Farias, 26, a midfielder who played 13 games and tallied one assist for the Anteaters in 2011, will try to help the Mexican national team be one of two squads to earn automatic berths in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the eight-team field.
Mexico is in the same four-team group as the United States, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout round, from which the two finalists will earn qualifying berths.
Mexico plays Puerto Rico on Wednesday, meets Team USA on Saturday and faced Costa Rica on Monday.
The knockout-round semifinals are Feb. 19 and the final is Feb. 21 in Houston.
