The Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team continues its breakthrough season in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

The Sailors are one of four teams in the Newport-Mesa area to qualify for the playoffs, which begin Wednesday.

Newport Harbor earned a huge 61-51 home win over Edison on Thursday. The victory, that ended a 15-game losing streak to the Chargers, gave the Sailors a second-place finish in the Sunset League tied with Edison, but the Chargers won the coin flip to be the No. 2 representative of the league. That meant Newport Harbor would be on the road.

The Sailors (21-7), the seventh Newport Harbor team in program history to reach 20 wins, will play at Perris (13-3), the Sunbelt League’s second-place team. Newport Harbor is seeking its first playoff win in three years.

Corona del Mar, which reached the finals last year, is back to try for another run in Division 3A. The Sea Kings (19-8), who tied for second in the Pacific Coast League, will play host to Indio Shadow Hills (10-15) at 7 p.m.

Costa Mesa is also at home after finishing second in the Orange Coast League amid its turnaround season. The Mustangs finished tied for last in the league last year.

Costa Mesa (14-10) will play host to JSerra (16-10), an at-large team from the Trinity League, in a Division 4AA first-round game.

Sage Hill School (16-8) finished third in the Academy League to qualify for the Division 4A playoffs. The Lightning will play at Panorama City St. Genevieve (16-12), the Santa Fe League champion.

Charlie Stassel is among four senior starters for Newport Harbor. Junior Collin Pipkin is a three-year varsity player who has also been a key player for the Sailors.

“I think we’re loose,” Newport Harbor Coach Bob Torribio said. “We’re ready to go. Not only do we have four seniors in our starting lineup, but they are very talented seniors … We are feeling really good and we want to keep the season going as long as we can.”
