College Roundup: Wagaman homers three times for OCC

Orange Coast 7, Canyons 3

SANTA CLARITA — Sophomore first baseman Eric Wagaman hit three home runs to lead the visiting Pirates in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Wagaman, who drove in four runs, now has six homers and 20 RBIs this season, both of which lead OCC (13-2), ranked No. 2 in Southern California. He homered in the third, fourth and ninth innings.

Travis Moniot, John Balliet and Ramiro Velasco all had two hits each for OCC, for which Cameron Jabara, a Newport Harbor High product, allowed two runs on six hits over six innings to improve to 4-1.

Sophomore Kyle Robenoil did not allow a hit in three scoreless innings to earn his first save.

OCC opens Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday at home against Santa Ana.

Canyons is 7-6.

Saint Katherine 7, Vanguard 2 (11 innings)

The Lions scored on a first-and-third double steal in the ninth to knot the score, 2-2, but the visitors scored five in the 11th in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Michael Fuchs was three for five and Trai Patrick was two for five for the Lions, for whom Brandon Sandoval drove in a run.

Vanguard starting pitcher Roberto Johnson allowed one run on two hits in five innings.

Vanguard is 13-8.

Saint Kathrine is 9-10.

Vanguard plays host to Hope International on Friday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

LA MIRADA — Courtney Thornhill pitched a one-hitter in Game 2 as the Lions swept host Biola in Golden State Athletic Conference play Tuesday.

Only a leadoff bunt single in the fifth inning kept Thornhill from a no-hitter in the 3-0 victory. She is 5-1.

Morgan Piblin was three for three with one run batted in and Samantha Shaffer was two for three with one RBI for the Lions (13-3, 4-0 in conference), who have won 10 games in a row.

Vanguard won the first game, 8-3, as Britany Heinle was two for three with three RBIs and Shaffer was two for four with one RBI.

Vanessa Dwyer pitched a complete game to improve to 6-1.

MEN’S GOLF

Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine senior David Kim was ninth to help the Anteaters tie two other schools in seventh place in the 54-hole event concluded Tuesday at Virginia Country Club.

Kim shot 213 for his fifth top-10 showing of the season.

Jonathan Young (31st at 220), Chris Parkinson (34th at 221) and Ryan O’Connor and Johnny Hyun (both 38th at 222) also stood out for UCI.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Arizona State 12, UC Irvine 7

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters fell to the No. 5-ranked Sun Devils in the fifth-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday at UCI.

Kelsey Thornton had two goals to lead UCI (9-6).

ASU is 9-2.
