College Roundup: Bishop, Hiura lead UCI baseball to win

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 5, Loyola Marymount 1

LOS ANGELES — Sophomores Cameron Bishop and Keston Hiura led the visiting Anteaters to their fourth straight win in nonconference play on Tuesday.

Bishop went three for four with a double and three runs batted in and earned the pitching victory with two hitless innings.

Hiura homered and went three for five with two RBIs to extend his hitting steak to 11 games.

Griffin Mazur had two hits, while Miles Glazier, Mitchell Miller, Ben Ritchey and Calvin Faucher, all had scoreless relief appearances on the mound.

UCI is 6-3.

LMU is 3-5.

UC Irvine 6, Nevada 0

Newport Harbor High product Shaun Vetrovec allowed three hits and struck out six in seven shutout innings to help the host Anteaters complete the three-game series sweep on Sunday.

Vetrovec is now 2-0 and has not allowed a run in 14 innings this season.

Keston Hiura drove in three runs and Alex Guenette knocked in two, while Mitchell Holland and Evan Cassolato had two hits apiece for the winners.

Sean Sparling and Calvin Faucher pitched scoreless relief innings for UCI, which improved to 5-3..

Nevada fell to 3-5.

Orange Coast 12, Long Beach 0

Michael Giacone allowed two hits in eight shutout innings to pace the host Pirates in the nonconference game Saturday.

Giacone struck out seven and improved to 3-1, helping OCC (9-6) win its sixth straight.

Robert Teel drove in two runs and eight Pirates had one RBI apiece, as Andrew Garcia and Thomas Waldenberger had two hits apiece for OCC.

Long Beach is 6-6.

Doubleheader

EL CAJON — Visiting Vanguard University split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against San Diego Christian on Saturday at Grossmont College.

Vanguard lost the opener, 8-0, but earned a 16-2 win in Game 2.

Sam Neufeld was four for four with seven runs batted in and one home run to lead a 14-hit outburst in the second game.

Jose Rojas was three for four with two RBIs and three runs, while Brandon Sandoval and Brock Eissman had two hits and one RBI apiece.

Lions freshman Tyler Steele pitched a seven-inning complete game to improve to 5-0.

Vanguard’s Paul Keating was three for four in Game 1.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 62, UC Davis 61

DAVIS – Junior Luke Nelson sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to lift the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

UCI (22-8, 11-3 in conference) squandered a 17-point lead in the second half.

Jaron Martin led the ‘Eaters with 16 points, going four for six from three-point range.

Mamadou Ndiaye had 14 rebounds, eight points and two blocked shots, while Mike Best chipped in 10 points and five rebounds for UCI.

Nelson finished with nine points, eight assists and four steals.

Davis fell to 10-17, 5-9.

Arizona Christian 84, Vanguard 70

Senior Jaamon Echols had 29 points to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Malachi Hoosein had 18 points for the Lions (18-10, 7-9 in conference).

ACU is 22-7, 10-6.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 73, Arizona Christian 65

Samantha Doucette lead four Lions in double figures with 20 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Melissa Norman had 14 points and 19 rebounds, while Claire Lamunu added 14 points and Maya Kennedy chipped in 12.

Vanguard improved to 22-5, 13-3.

ACU is 13-16, 5-11.

Long Beach State 67, UC Irvine 49

LONG BEACH — Jenny Dee had 13 points in 14 reserve minutes to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Dee was three for eight from three-point range for UCI (4-24, 1-13 in conference).

Tayla Jackson added nine points and nine rebounds for UCI.

Long Beach State is 21-7, 10-4.

Mt. San Antonio 78, Orange Coast 49

WALNUT — Jenna Rodriguez had 13 points and Sami Little added 10 for the visiting Pirates in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Saturday.

No. 16-seeded OCC, which received 11 rebounds from Sarah Nunes, finished its season at 16-14.

The top-seeded Mounties improved to 30-1.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine def. UC Irvine

Senior outside hitter Kyle Russell had a career-high 24 kills, but he visiting Waves earned a 21-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 15-10 win in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday.

No. 13-ranked UCI fell to 4-12, 3-11 in conference.

No. 10-ranked Pepperdine is 7-5, 6-5.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

EL CAJON — Visiting Vanguard University earned a split with San Diego Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday at Grossmont College.

Kimberlee Estes drove in both runs in a 2-1 Game 1 victory for the Lions, who were bested, 5-2, in the second game.

Lindsey Gillmore was two for three to pace Vanguard (13-8, 1-1 in conference) in the second game.

San Diego Christian is 14-5, 1-1.
