Women’s Basketball: Vanguard’s Doucette, Norman named All-GSAC

Vanguard University seniors Samantha Doucette and Melissa Norman have been named All-Golden State Athletic Conference in women’s basketball.

Doucette, a 5-foot-11 guard-forward, is a three-time all-conference honoree. She averaged 17 points, five rebounds and 1.7 assists during the regular season to help the No. 6-ranked Lions compile a 22-5 record heading into the GSAC Tournament that begins Friday.

Norman leads NAIA Division I in rebounding (12.2 per game) and double-doubles (19, which is five more than the runner-up). The 6-2 post player who has started all 27 games, is averaging 14.3 points per game and also had 47 blocked shots and 39 steals.

The Lions finished 13-3 in regular-season conference play, good for third place.

They face No. 6-seeded William Jessup in the first round of the GSAC Tournament on Friday at noon at Hope International University in Fullerton. A victory would propel Coach Russ Davis’ squad into the semifinals on Saturday at noon against No. 2-seeded The Master’s College, ranked No. 5 in the nation.

The GSAC Tournament title game is Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Hope International.

Westmont senior Krissy Karr was named Player of the Year, while The Master’s junior Bianca Cubello was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Westmont’s Kirsten Moore was named Coach of the Year.
