Monty McCasland allowed two hits and struck out five in seven scoreless innings to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Friday.

Jacob Leal was two for two with one run batted in, Brock Eissman had three RBIs and Bryce Wetherall added two for the No. 16-ranked winners (17-9).

Morningside is 10-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Ball State

COLUMBUS, Ohio —Thomas Hodges and Tamir Hershko had 10 kills apiece to lead the Anteaters’ 25-14, 25-22, 25-19 sweep at Ohio State.

Michael Saeta had 38 assists and three aces for UCI (14-6).

Ball State is 14-6.

Orange Coast def. Pierce

WOODLAND HILLS – Jordan Hoppe had 16 kills and two aces to lead the visiting Pirates to the 25-18, 25-22, 13-25, 25-21 nonconference victory on Friday.

Matt Ujkic had 12 kills and Justin Kam added 11 for the No. 2-ranked Pirates, who have won nine straight matches.

Pierce is ranked No. 6.

OCC opens Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday at No. 3-ranked Golden West.

Long Beach def. Golden West

LONG BEACH – The visiting Rustlers fell to 7-2 as the No. 5-ranked Vikings posted a 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15 nonconference victory Friday.

LBCC is 9-2, while Golden West is 7-2.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept two Golden State Athletic Conference games Friday, winning the opener, 7-0, then prevailing, 6-2.

In Game 1, Vanessa Dwyer threw a one-hitter, allowing a triple in the second inning. She improved to 9-1.

Samantha Shaffer was three for four with two runs batted in, while Kaitlin Estes was two for three with one RBI.

In the second game, Payton Ross, Taylor Wilson and Morgan Pilbin all had two hits and one RBI to back pitcher Courtney Thornhill, who improved to 7-2.

Vanguard is 20-4, 11-2 in conference.

Menlo is 15-13, 2-6.

Santiago Canyon 11, Orange Coast 8

Cayla Ezelle was two for four with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game on Friday.

Nala Osario and Linnea O’Donahugh each had two hits and one RBI for OCC (3-12, 1-6).

Santiago Canyon is 13-3-1, 6-1.

Riverside 13, Golden West 0

RIVERSIDE – Patricia Boyette had the lone hit for the visiting Rustlers in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Golden West is 0-15, 0-7 in conference.

RCC is 8-7, 4-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 8, Hawaii 7

Mary Brooks scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds left to help the host Anteaters open Big West Conference play with a win on Friday.

Brooks had three goals and Jenna Phreaner had 13 saves for the No. 5-ranked ‘Eaters.

Hawaii is ranked No. 8.
