College Roundup: UCI baseball wins series against No. 1 TCU

UC Irvine 6, TCU 3

Cole Kreuter went two for four with a home run and two runs batted in to lead the host Anteaters to a second-straight victory over the No. 1-ranked Horn Frogs.

UCI clinched a nonconference series victory to improve to 9-4 and extend its winning streak to six.

Adrain Damla was two for four with an RBI to back freshman starting pitcher Cole Spear, who allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Freshman Andre Pallante worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, while senior Calvin Faucher notched his seventh save.

TCU is 11-3.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m..

Orange Coast 8, Santa Ana 7

Robert Teel went two for three with three runs batted in to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.

Walker Keller and J.T. Navarro had two hits apiece for OCC (16-2, 3-0 in conference).

Ryan Randel got the win in relief for OCC and is now 3-0.

Santa Ana is 14-5, 0-3.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept Morningside in two nonconference games Saturday.

The Lions won the first game, 7-2, and the second game, 2-0, to improve to 19-9.

Michael Fuchs was three for four, while Brandon Sandoval was two for four with a home run and three runs batted in for the Lions in the opener.

Shane Elias-Calles was two for four with two RBIs and a homer for the Lions, for whom Chris Lumanlan allowed one run on five hits over seven innings to improve to 5-1.

In the second game, three Vanguard pitchers combined on the shutout, with Josh Baily getting the win and Jake Mellenthin posting his seventh save.

Josh Weeks was two for three and Brock Eissman got the other Vanguard hit and both of the Lions RBIs.

Morningside is 10-9.

Saddleback 11, Golden West 3

No statistics were available for the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday at Golden West.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Aaron Koubi had 13 kills and hit .455 to lead the visiting No. 6-ranked Anteaters to a 28-26, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes in the nonconference match Saturday.

Ohio State (19-1) saw its 42-match winning streak end.

Thomas Hodges and Tamir Hershko had 11 kills each to help UCI (15-6) hit .361 as a team, 139 points better than OSU.

Michael Saeta had 27 assists, two aces and five kills for the winners.
