High School Roundup: Mesa’s Belmontes blasts grand slam, HR

SOFTBALL

Costa Mesa 18, Santa Ana 4 (five innings)

Freshman Katie Belmontes was two for two with two home runs, including a grand slam, in Tuesday’s nonleague game at Costa Mesa High.

Belmontes now has six home runs in six games for Costa Mesa (5-1).

Paige Fisher pitched all five innings and went three for three at the plate for the Mustangs, who play host to La Quinta on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 6, University 0

IRVINE — Sophomore pitcher Chazz Martinez finished with a complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game on Tuesday.

It was CdM’s third shutout in a row, as the Sea Kings remained undefeated at 7-0, 2-0 in league.

Evan Larsen had two hits, Nick Premer added two runs batted in, while Brenden Heuston and Robby Hurst had one RBI each for CdM, which will play host to University Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Larsen, a senior standout bound for Cal State Fullerton, is slated to pitch.

Calvary Chapel 4, Estancia 0

Nick Torres went one for two for Estancia in the Orange Coast League game on Tuesday.

He dropped to 3-2 as a pitcher after giving up two runs (one unearned) in 4 2/3 innings.

Colin Gardner, Connor Brown and Jake McIntyre each went one for three for Estancia (7-4,1-2 in league).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 10, Woodbridge 8

IRVINE — Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler swept in doubles for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League opener on the road.

Bjorn Hoffmann, Pedro Fernandez del Valle and Kyle Pham each won twice in singles for CdM (7-2), which plays host to Northwood on Thursday.

Newport Harbor 13, San Juan Hills 5

David Lee swept at No. 1 singles for the Sailors in the nonleague match on Monday at Newport Harbor.

Sam Leeman and Mark Schafer swept at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor (4-5).

The sAilors play host to Fountain Valley on Thursday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 14, El Dorado 5

PLACENTIA — Senior captain Rylie Siegfried had four goals, an assist and six draws won for the Sailors in their league opener Tuesday on the road.

Heather Roberts, Katie Hendrix and Adena Rothbard each scored two for Newport Harbor. The Sailors defense, led by Jordan Rausch, Sophia Riggan, Maxine Aiello, Jill Rosten, Hayden Allen and Hannah Sanders, allowed just two goals in the final 40 minutes.

The Sailors play at Yorba Linda on Thursday.

Corona del Mar 15, Woodbridge 1

IRVINE — CdM junior Jensen Coop had five goals for the Sea Kings in Monday’s Pacific Coast League opener on the road.

Maria LaBruna had three goals for CdM (3-1) and Kennedy Mulvaney had two goals, six assists and seven draw controls. Olivia Holton, Ellery Amery, Courtney Johnston, Lauren Rowe and Emily Cannon also scored for CdM.

Katherine Mulvaney, Joslyn Simaan, Lauren Kobayashi and goalie Ashley Olson (five saves) anchored the defensive effort for CdM, which plays host to Northwood on Wednesday.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Estancia 103, Garden Grove 68

Jason Chesemore and Cobi White each won two individual events for the Eagles in Monday’s nonleague meet.

Chesemore won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 55.76 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.39). White captured the 200 individual medley in 2:13.51, and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.66. Kent Lim also was a winner, taking the 50 freestyle in 24.94.

Other top finishers for Estancia included Chris DeFrenza (second in 200 IM), Victor Castillo (second in 500 free) and Alex Epperson (second in 100 back). Joseph Carrillo was third in the backstroke as Estancia swept the top three places in that event.

Estancia plays host to Saddleback on Wednesday in its Orange Coast League opener.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Garden Grove 104, Estancia 66

The Eagles fell in the nonleague meet Monday.
