CdM too much for Newport

The annual Battle of the Bay on the lacrosse field was more of a history review reminiscent of a lesson between the Spanish Armada and a flotilla of outriggers.

Corona del Mar High’s boys were simply too much for Newport Harbor in an amazingly 20-3 lopsided victory that cemented CdM’s status as an Orange County powerhouse.

The Sea Kings improved to 6-0 with the victory. Newport Harbor fell to 2-6 on the season.

“We had some opportunities and we made the best of them,” CdM Coach G.W. Mix said. “The kids are playing really well right now.”

The Sea Kings must be playing really well. They dominated throughout against the Sailors.

“Well, you know our kids played hard,” Mix added. “They play hard every time we go out there. We had some opportunities and we made the best of them.”

Humbled in the effort and final score, Harbor Coach Mark Todd could only concur.

“Our kids played hard,” Todd said, respecting that his younger team may have been overmatched. “Coming in I thought we had a puncher’s chance.”

CdM senior Stephen Von Der Ahe and junior Jordan Greenhall led the way with goals each.

Mix was able to relax early as the Sea Kings established an insurmountable first half lead, 13-1.

It was only a matter of time that CdM would win the rivalry game.

“It was a good win,” Greenhall said. “We know the Battle of the Bay thing matters to the kids around school, but not so much to us,”
