College Roundup: Sandoval’s grand slam highlights VU’s win

Vanguard 8, Arizona Christian 1

Brandon Sandoval had a grand slam and six runs batted in to lead the host No. 21-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Sandoval, a senior center fielder, was four for five, while Michael Fuchs was two for four for Vanguard (21-15, 13-6 in conference).

Marty McCasland allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings to earn the victory and improve to 5-2.

ACU is 19-16, 10-11.

Golden West 6, Cypress 2

The host Rustlers scored five in the seventh inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and take over sole possession of third in the Orange Empire Conference on Thursday.

Jeff Zordini was two for three with two runs batted in, while Miles Moran was two for three for Golden West (14-12, 6-5 in conference).

Nick Ingrides, Louie Canjura and Jeremiah Vison had one RBI apiece for the winners.

Troy Bethel allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings to earn his first win of the season.

Cypress is 18-9, 5-6.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

No. 17-ranked Vanguard University earned a split with Golden State Athletic Conference visitor Biola on Friday.

The Lions lost the opener, 6-5, and won the second game, 2-0.

Courtney Thornhill threw a five-hit shutout in Game 2, striking out five to improve to 12-3.

Taylor Wilson and Kaitlin Estes had the only two hits for Vanguard in the victory, in which Summer Penner and Payton Ross had one run batted in apiece.

In the first game, Wilson was two for four, while Penner and Samantha Shaffer had two RBIs apiece for the Lions.

GSAC-leading Vanguard is 35-9, 12-4 in conference.

Biola is 17-14-1, 6-8.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Golden West

Sophomore Jordan Hoppe had 14 kills and two aces to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference sweep on Friday.

OCC (14-1, 4-0 in conference) earned its 13th straight win with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 triumph, its 11th sweep during the winning streak.

Justin Kam had 10 kills, while Austin Marriott had six kills on nine attempts without and error for the state’s No. 1-ranked team.

Golden West is 8-6, 1-4.
