High School Roundup: HBHS baseball absorbs losses

National High School Invitational

CARY, N.C. — Huntington Beach went into the prestigious national baseball tournament having not lost in the first nine games of the year, and it wound up dropping two of its first three games this week.

The Oilers, ranked No. 2 in the country by PerfectGame.org, won’t be able to defend their National High School Invitational crown.

They opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to No. 21 Georgia Winder-Barrow in 10 innings on Wednesday. Left-hander Nick Pratto, a USC signee, went 9 1/3 innings, striking out nine and allowing one run in the loss.

On Thursday, Pratto and Garrett Runyan each drove in a run, helping Huntington Beach bounce back with an 8-3 win against No. 40 Florida Merritt Island in a consolation game.

The Oilers’ second game on Thursday saw them suffer a 6-2 setback to No. 10 Alabama Cullman.

Huntington Beach (10-2) ends the tournament on Saturday with a game against No. 6 Florida Canterbury at 5:30 a.m. PST.

Dana Hills plays No. 5 Orange Lutheran in the tournament finale at 9:15 a.m.

The Oilers will return home and resume Sunset League play on Wednesday. They travel to Los Alamitos, looking to improve to 4-0 in league.

Corona del Mar 12, Northwood 1

Preston Hartsell went two for three with a triple and two RBIs for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League win on Friday.

Alex Shaddid added a doule and four RBIS, Nolan Dunn produced two doubles and two RBIs and Garrett Freedman contributed two hits for CdM (8-4, 4-1 in league).

The Sea Kings will next play host to Beckman on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. A home-plate dedication ceremony will take place for late umpire Randy Gersten.

Gersten was a long time and beloved fixture in the Newport Beach Community and both his sons attended CdM.

Kennedy 6, Costa Mesa 4

Kennedy 8, Costa Mesa 7

ANAHEIM — Dylan Schafer went four for eight with two runs during the Mustangs’ nonleague doubleheader at Dee Fee Field on Friday.

Costa Mesa dropped to 7-9 overall.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Edison

Cole Pender finished with 11 kills in the Sailors’ 25-16, 25-23, 25-22 sweep on the road Friday, helping them improve to 3-0 in Sunset League play.

Newport Harbor (18-0 overall) plays at Corona del Mar (15-2) in the Battle of the Bay rivalry on Saturday at 6:15 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Los Amigos 13, Bolsa Grande 3

Alyssa Ledezma went three for four with two doubles to lead the Lobos (7-8) to the Garden Grove League-opening win on Thursday.

Michelle Islas also had three hits and three runs scored in the win. Jailyn Torres, Brittney Trujillo, Christina Rodriguez and Brittany Fraser all added two-hit efforts for Los Amigos, which had 15 hits as a team.

Marina 10, Newport Harbor 0

Shayla Thomas, Emily Rush, and Sage Malvin all had multi-hit games for the Vikings (2-6) in a Sunset League opener on Thursday.

Rush pitched 32/3 scoreless innings to earn her first win of the season.

Leah Freeman and Kendall Machado collected hits for the Sailors (4-10).

Edison 2, Fountain Valley 1

Danielle Votendahl hit a walk-off home run for the Chargers (8-2) in the bottom of the seventh to sink the Barons (7-9) in a Sunset League opener on Thursday.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Woodbridge 89.5, Corona del Mar 39.5

Mason Crane scored victories in the shotput (54 feet, 8 inches) and the discus (161-9) for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet on Thursday.

Leif Hellgren also had a pair of event wins in the 800 meters (2:05) and 1,600 (4:27).

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Woodbridge 85, Corona del Mar 37

Raquel Powers swept the distance races for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet on Thursday.

Paige Damron, Vivi Dang, Julianne Bartz, and Angeliki Harris combined to run 4:13.5 for CdM’s victorious 1,600 relay team.

Amanda Cooper won the discus at 120 feet, 3 inches.
