Briefs: UCI’s Pham earns honor

UC Irvine senior Tyler Pham was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

Pham was dominant in singles to help the Anteaters record conference wins over Hawaii and Riverside by scores of 6-1 and 4-2, respectively.

Pham, playing at No. 4 singles, defeated Hawaii’s Ruben Blattner, 6-1, 6-0. He topped UCR’s Sean Robles, 6-1, 6-1.

Pham paired with Jonathan Hammel in the No. 1 doubles to post a 6-2 win over the Riverside duo.

This is Pham’s third Big West Player of the Week plaudit.

UCI’s George shines

UC Irvine junior Megan George has been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in women’s track following her record-setting performance.

George broke her own school record in winning the 100-meter hurdles in 13.28 seconds at the UC Riverside Spring Classic on Saturday. That time ranks No. 10 in the nation and leads the Big West this season. It eclipsed her previous best of 13.51 set last year.

George also ran the second leg on both of UCI’s relays Saturday. The 4x100 relay finished third in 45.71 and the 4x400 sixth with a time of 3:46.69.
