College Roundup: VU baseball sweeps Arizona Christian

Doubleheader
PHOENIX — Vanguard infielders Matt Harris and Trai Patrick had a monster day to help the No. 15-ranked Lions sweep host Arizona Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Vanguard won the opener, 11-8, then topped the Firestorm, 9-8, in Game 2 to sweep the three-game series and improve to 26-9-1, 16-5 in conference.
Harris was six for eight in the two games with six combined runs batted in and four runs scored. He was four for five with four RBIs and two doubles in the opener.
Patrick was seven for nine with five runs scored and two RBIs on the day. He went three for three in Game 2 and was four for six in Game 1.
Tyler Steele pitched five innings to improve to 8-0 with the win in Game 2, in which Michael Jordan posted his 11th save.
In the opener, Ryan Heinle allowed eight hits and no earned runs in seven innings to improve to 5-2.
Arizona Christian is 9-22, 6-18.

Hawaii 8, UC Irvine 4
HONOLULU — The visiting Anteaters managed five hits and no earned runs in the Big West Conference opener late Friday night.
Sophomore center fielder Keston Hiura doubled and drove in two runs for UCI, which entered Saturday’s late game at Hawaii at 15-8.
Grant Palmer also had an RBI for UCI, for which senior Elliot Surrey took the loss. Surrey allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned) in six innings and is now 2-2.
The win put Hawaii at 12-14.

SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
The host Lions swept Golden State Athletic Conference rival San Diego Christian on Saturday, scoring a pair of extra-inning victories in which the winning runs scored without a hit.
Lindsay Sullivan’s squeeze bunt in the ninth inning was the difference in a 2-1 win in Game 1, while Samantha Shaffer’s sacrifice fly in the eighth gave Vanguard a 3-2 walk-off win in Game 2.
Alexandra Olvera allowed six hits and no earned runs in a complete-game effort in the opener. She improved to 13-8.
Vanguard managed just four hits in Game 1, in which both its runs were unearned.
In Game 2, Kaitlin Estes was two for three and scored twice to pace a seven-hit attack for the Lions (25-16, 7-7 in conference).
Taylor Doyle pitched eight innings, allowing five hits and one earned run to get the win for the Lions.
No. 14-ranked San Diego Christian fell to 26-11, 8-6.

Four Anteaters had two goals apiece in the Big West Conference road victory Saturday.
The No. 6-ranked Anteaters are 14-9, 1-1 in conference.
The No. 25-ranked Matadors are 10-15, 0-1.

FULLERTON — Sophomore Vivien Dvali posted a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles for the visiting Anteaters’ lone point in the Big West Conference match Saturday.
UCI is 3-13, 1-3 in conference.
Cal State Fullerton is 16-3, 5-0.
