College Roundup: UCI baseball edges Cal State Bakersfield

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Bakersfield 6

BAKERSFIELD — Four Cal State Bakersfield errors led to four unearned runs to help the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Adam Alcantara was two for four with two runs batted in to lead UCI (19-10), which has won three straight.

Cole Kreuter was two for four, while Keston Hiura and Mitchell Holland both drove in runs for the winners.

Mitchell Miller earned the victory with three scoreless innings of one-hit relief.

Calvin Faucher posted his fifth save.

UCI opens a three-game Big West Conference series with Long Beach State on Friday at Blair Field.

UC Irvine 8, UC Riverside 3

Senior left fielder Grant Palmer was four for four with three runs batted in to pace the host Anteaters’ 14-hit attack in the Big West Conference game Sunday.

Senior first baseman Mitchell Holland and junior shortstop John Brontsema were both three for five, while sophomore third baseman Parker Coss had two hits to help UCI (18-10, 3-3 in conference) earn its second straight victory to win the three-game series.

Alonzo Garcia earned the pitching victory in relief after freshman Mitchell Miller allowed four hits and walked two in one inning of his starting debut. Miller allowed one run.

Shaun Vetrovec, Miles Glazier and Jordan Bocko combined for 4 1/3 scoreless relief innings for UCI.

UC Riverside fell to 13-17, 3-3.

Saddleback 12, Orange Coast 2

MISSION VIEJO — Three Pirates’ pitchers allowed four runs apiece in the Orange Empire Conference road game on Tuesday.

No player had more than one hit for OCC (15-13, 6-7 in conference). Jake Gozzo went one for two with one run batted in and scored a run, and Mondesi Gutierrez was one for three with an RBI for the Pirates.

Saddleback is 23-5, 11-2.

The two teams meet again Thursday at OCC at 2 p.m.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Pasadena Invitational

PASADENA — Orange Coast College sophomore Rebecca Aguilar and freshman Lauren Weins each won three individual events to help the Pirates earn the team title on Saturday at Pasadena City College.

Aguilar topped the field in the 50-yard freestyle (24.21 seconds), the 100 free (53.35) and the 100 butterfly (58.18). She also contributed to the winning 400 free relay quartet (3:38.54) that included Nacinda Paap, Alexa Clayfield and Sierra Cox.

Weins won the 100 backstroke (59.09), the 200 back (2:09.63) and the 200 fly (2:14.81).

OCC amassed 851 points, well better than runner-up Santa Barbara (557).

MEN’S SWIMMING

Pasadena Invitational

PASADENA — Orange Coast College sophomore Jonathan Panchak set meet/pool record in winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, as well as the 200 individual medley on Saturday at Pasadena City College.

Panchak won the 100 breaststroke in 56.53 seconds, the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.48 and the 200 IM in 1:52.34. He was also a member of OCC’s winning 400 medley relay team (3:26.38) that also included Tyler Connors, Diego Pabalan and Alex Furlong.

The Pirates finished second with 571 team points, behind Golden West (1,095.5).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Cerritos Invitational

NORWALK — Orange Coast College freshman Gabe Warner won the 200 meters and broke a 40-year-old school record while finishing third in the 100 on Saturday at Cerritos College.

Warner’s time of 10.52 seconds in the 100 bettered the previous OCC standard of 10.54 set by Paul Desmet in 1976.

Warner’s winning time in the 200 was 21.22.

OCC’s Galyn Nash (15 minutes, 32.24 seconds) and Danny Dominguez (15:37.89) finished first and second, respectively in 1,500, while Pirates sophomore Noah Rogers won the 400 hurdles in 55.71.

OCC’s 1,600 relay team of Kyle Fegan, Jeremiah Lewis, Eamon Smythe and Rogers posted a winning time of 3:19.06.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Cerritos Invitational

NORWALK — Orange Coast College sophomore Taylor Sims won the 100-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 14.35 seconds on Saturday at Cerritos College.

Sims’ previous best of 14.63 had been the school record.

OCC long jumper Lauren Delgadillo was second with a mark of 17 feet, 3 3/4 inches, while freshman Alyssa Allen was fourth in the 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 06.46 seconds.

MEN’S CREW

Orange Coast def. UC Irvine

The Pirates earned the inaugural Collins Cup that goes to the winner of the dual meet on Saturday in Newport Harbor.

OCC came from behind to win the varsity eight race, completing the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 51.08 seconds.

The winning boat included Garinn Morton, Weston Cole, Logan Carter, Ben Orem, Maxwell Hadden, David Ulicki, Sam Melvin, Jacob Studer and coxswain Chase Wray.

In the second varsity eight event, OCC’s novice A boat won in 6:08.7 and its novice B boat was second in 6:19.0, more than three seconds ahead of UCI’s entry.

OCC also claimed the varsity four event with its varsity defeating its novice boat.

OCC is scheduled to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.

WOMEN’S CREW

Orange Coast def. UC Irvine

For the ninth straight season, OCC captured the Collins Cup that goes to the annual dual meet, completed Saturday on Newport Harbor.

OCC’s varsity eight boat of Tess Burney, Claireliece Kennedy, Maya Takeuchi, Elery Bermudez, Marissa Bonnefin, Kristen Klein, Abigail Daniels, Danielle Dubois and coxswain Sophie Blair completed the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 38.9 seconds, almost 17 seconds better than the Anteaters.

OCC’s novice eight boat won in 7:15.9, some 16 seconds ahead of UCI.
