High School Roundup: Estancia softball stuns Calvary Chapel

Estancia 7, Calvary Chapel 5

Maya Van Den Heever was three for four with two doubles for Estancia, which ended a long Calvary Chapel winning streak in the Orange Coast League game Thursday at Estancia High.

Calvary Chapel, the seven-time defending Orange Coast League champion, had won 67 straight league games since the 2008 season.

Felicia Rios was also three for four for Estancia (6-8, 2-0 in league), and Kalena Shepherd was two for three with a double. Brittany Walker pitched the complete game.

“So proud of our girls,” Estancia Coach Carrie Lester said in a text message. “They made some mistakes, but never lost focus. Went deep in the count each at-bat and earned the win.”

Calvary Chapel is 1-12, 1-1 in league.

Estancia plays at rival Costa Mesa on Tuesday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Costa Mesa def. Estancia

Stanford-bound senior opposite Mason Tufuga finished with 17 kills and four service aces in the visiting Mustangs’ 25-22, 25-7, 25-21 sweep on Thursday.

Coby Pham had 22 assists and Simon Daniel contributed eight kills and five blocks for Costa Mesa (10-1, 4-1 in league).

The Eagles dropped to 0-5 in league.

Costa Mesa plays host to Calvary Chapel on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., while Estancia travels to Saddleback for a 5:15 p.m. match.

Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Albert Son recorded eight kills in an Academy League match the Lightning swept, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, on the road Thursday.

Parker Warden finished with six kills, Shane Larimer had six service aces, and Ryan Shean added six kills and eight digs for Sage Hill (4-7, 4-3 in league).

BASEBALL

Estancia 3, Downey Calvary Chapel 2

Sophomore Nic Mazur went 5 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run in the Eagles’ nonleague game at home on Thursday.

Colin Gardner earned the win in relief for Estancia (12-7).

Jeff Alai and Connor Brown each went three for four with a run batted in, while Ryan Harrison was two for two.

The Eagles play at Saddleback in an Orange Coast League game on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Woodbridge 4

Pedro Fernandez del Valle and Bjorn Hoffmann swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match at CdM.

Oliver Kim and Ryan Wessler swept in doubles for CdM (11-3, 5-1 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Woodbridge is ranked No. 9.

CdM plays at Beckman on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 13, Edison 5

David Lee, playing No. 1 singles, swept his three sets to lead the host Sailors to their first Sunset League win on Thursday.

Newport Harbor’s No. 2 doubles team of David Sharp and Sam Leaman swept.

The Sailors (6-9, 1-4 in league) play at Fountain Valley on Monday at 3 p.m.
