College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball falls at BYU

PROVO, Utah — The No. 1-ranked Cougars ousted the No. 14 Anteaters, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23, in a quarterfinal match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Saturday.
UCI ends its season at 10-20. BYU improved to 24-3 and will host the MPSF semifinals and finals next week.
Junior Michael Saeta and senior Kyle Russell led the Anteaters with 11 kills each. Saeta, the MPSF leader in aces, fired a team-high two against the Cougars. Senior Jason Agopian recorded seven kills and team-high three block assists. Thomas Hodges had six digs, three kills and two blocks and Dante Chakravorti recorded 31 assists.

Beach Invitational
LONG BEACH — UC Irvine sophomore Persis William-Mensah broke her own school record in the 100 meters Saturday.
She won the event with a time of 11.69 seconds, eclipsing her previous UCI mark of 11.72 set last year.
Kaulyn Lee-McNeill finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.09 as she improved on her No. 4 time in the Anteater record book.
Michelle Norman finished fourth of 86 entrants in the 200 meters in 24.18.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Megan George finished fifth of 95 with a time of 13.37.

ROCKLIN — Alexandra Olvera struck out six and gave up two earned runs in eight innings for the Lions, who swept the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.
Olvera, who pitched seven scoreless innings in the first game, improved to 16-8.
Vanguard’s Payton Ross and doubled in a run in the top of the eighth inning, and Kaitlin Estes and Kristyn Whitley each singled in a run.
Taylor Doyle earned the win in the second game by going the distance. She struck out four and allowed three runs.
In Game 2, Payton Ross went four for five with three runs batted in for Vanguard (29-20, 10-10 in conference).

Tyler Steele tossed a four-hitter to complete the No. 11-ranked Lions sweep of a Golden State Athlete Conference doubleheader at home on Saturday.
Steele, who improved to 9-0, struck out four and walked on.
Brandon Sandoval and Jose Rojas each went three for five with one run batted in during the Lions’ first game.
Vanguard improved to 34-9-1 and 19-5 in conference.

LONG BEACH — Junior Lloyd Sicard registered the top finish for UC Irvine Saturday.
He finished third of 54 competitors in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.75 seconds.
