Orange Empire Conference championships

CYPRESS – Orange Coast College sophomore Karen Trinh defeated Fullerton’s Alex Altimarano, 7-5, 6-2, in the final to claim the Orange Empire Conference singles title on Saturday at Cypress College.

Trinh, the No. 3 seed, improved to 20-2 in singles this season.

OCC sophomore Clarisa Colling, the No. 1 seed, withdrew with an injury after advancing to the quarterfinals.

MEN’S GOLF

Cal Poly Shootout

ARROYO GRANDE – UC Irvine junior David Kim earned medalist honors to lead the Anteaters to a second-place finish in the 54-hole event concluded Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club.

Kim birdied the last hole, the par-five 18th, to win the individual title by one shot with a three-round total of eight-under-par 208.

UCI’s team score of 1,082 in the six-count-five format, was 24 stroke behind UC Santa Barbara.

It was the second collegiate title for Kim, who previously won the Pacific Invitational in November, 2015. He has 11 top-10 finishes in his career, including seven this season.

Kim’s 16 birdies tied for the top spot in the tournament.

UCI senior Bryan Shin was third (210).

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 14, USC 3

LOS ANGELES – Keston Hiura and Cole Kreuter both homered and drove in three runs to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Kreuter was three for five, while Hiura was two for five.

Dailen Lee was three for five, while Mikey Duarte, Adrian Damla, Evan Cassolato and Parker Coss drove in two runs apiece.

Andre Pallante threw two scoreless relief innings to earn the win and improve to 4-2.

UCI is 14-20.

USC is 18-17.

Vanguard 19, Marymount 0

Trai Patrick homered and drove in three runs to pace the host Lions’ 20-hit attack in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Tanner Perry, Brock Eissman and Josh Weeks also homered for the winners (28-17).

Shane Elias-Calles was three for four and five different Lions had two RBIs apiece.

Michael Kashou allowed three hits in five innings to earn the win and four relievers worked one inning each to complete the shutout.

USC 9, UC Irvine 7

The host Anteaters led, 6-2, through three innings of the nonconference game Monday.

Keston Hiura was two for two with two runs and one run batted in for the Anteaters, who fell to 13-20, with their 15th loss in their last 17 games.

Parker Coss was two for four with two RBIs, while Mikey Duarte had two hits and Cole Kreuter had two RBIs for UCI.

USC improved to 18-16.
