High School Roundup: Super steps up for Sage Hill

Sage Hill 2, Crean Lutheran 0

Junior Brett Super threw a two-hitter and struck out seven, helping the host Lightning clinch at least a share of the Academy League title on Tuesday.

Sage Hill (21-1, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 poll, can claim the outright league title for the second straight year with a win on the road against No. 1 Crean Lutheran on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Super improved to 9-0 and lowered his earned-run average to 0.72.

Tobias Bush went two for three for the Lightning, while and Conner Bock and Matt King each had a run batted in.

Laguna Beach 4, Estancia 3

Senior Connor Brown pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out six in the Eagles’ Orange Coast League game at home on Tuesday.

The Eagles (15-11, 8-6 in league) remained in third place in league with Godinez losing to Costa Mesa, 3-2, on Tuesday.

Estancia plays at Laguna Beach at on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar 6, University 1

Evan Larsen pitched a complete-game four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game on Tuesday.

JT Schwartz went four four with three RBIs and a double, Nick Sperr two for four with an RBI and Donato DiFerdinando two for two for CdM (18-4, 8-4 in league), which plays host to Beckman on Friday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 197, Los Alamitos 197, Sailors win on sixth man score

Freshman Ethan Barnes shot a two-under par 33 to help lead the Sailors to a dramatic Sunset League win that gave them a share of the title with Huntington Beach on Monday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Drake Siegel was Newport Harbor’s sixth player, and his 45 was one stroke better than Los Al’s sixth.

Noah Mayne (37), Ryan Standt (40), Richie Simons (43) and Matt Smith (44) also scored for Newport Harbor (9-4, 8-2 in league).

The Sailors compete in Sunset League finals starting Wednesday at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Newport Harbor is in CIF team competition May 16 at Mile Square Park.

Pacific Coast League finals

LONG BEACH — Corona del Mar High’s Guy Clauss won a four-person playoff after two holes to grab the ninth and final spot to advance to the CIF Individual tournament Tuesday at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Clauss grabbed the ninth and final qualifying spot. He shot a two-day total of 78-74—152.

Clauss will compete on Monday at SeaCliff Country Club.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 14, Yorba Linda 3

Senior Stephen Von Der Ahe finished with four goals and two ground balls for the top-seeded Sea Kings in the opening round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs at home on Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (17-1) play host to No. 8 Tesoro (10-5) in the quarterfinals at home on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Tesoro, which advanced with a 5-4 first-round win against No. 9 El Toro, lost at CdM, 17-6, on April 12.

Jason Simaan won 12 of 13 faceoffs against Yorba Linda.

Eric Fries had three goals, an assist and ground ball for CdM.

Trabuco Hills 13, Newport Harbor 2

LAKE FOREST — The No. 10-seeded Sailors lost on the road to No. 11 Trabuco Hills for the second straight year in the first round of U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor, the Sunset League champion, finished 10-7 overall.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sage Hill def. Oxford Academy

Parker Warden recorded 16 kills and three blocks for the host Lightning in a 25-16, 20-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12 Academy League win on Tuesday.

Albert Son had 14 kills and Josh Lee added 10 kills.

Shane Larimer amassed 50 assists.

Corona del Mar def. Irvine

Sam Kobrine had 11 kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-9 win and a perfect run in the Pacific Coast League.

Will Hunter (seven kills), Brandon Browning (six kills, three aces), Mitch Haly (five kills, three aces), Grant Shaw (four aces) and Matt Ctvrtlik (23 assists) also contributed for CdM (22-5, 10-0 in league).

Costa Mesa def. Estancia

Mason Tufuga had 18 kills, four assists and four blocks to help lead the Mustangs to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 Orange Coast League win in the regular-season finale on Tuesday.

Coby Pham (29 assists), Nick Warner (six kills, eight digs), Nabeel Salameh (seven kills, four blocks) and Simon Daniel (seven kills) also contributed for Costa Mesa (14-2, 8-2 in league).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 16, Laguna Hills 9

Jensen Coop scored six goals for the Sea Kings in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs on Tuesday at CdM.

Kennedy McGuinness added four goals for No. 4-seeded CdM (15-2). Kennedy Mulvaney had three goals, two assists and four ground balls, tying her for the team ground ball lead with Ellery Amdor.

Caroline Bethel had a team-best five draw controls and Ashley Olson made nine saves for CdM.

CdM will play host to No. 5-seeded Tesoro in a South Division quarterfinal Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Calvary Chapel 15, Estancia 5

Maya Van Den Heever, Felicia Rios, Emily Kubisty and Kalena Shepherd all hit triples for Estancia in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League game.

Estancia is now 9-10, 5-2 in league.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 18, Irvine 0

IRVINE — Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Monday’s Pacific Coast League finale at Irvine High.

Max Bui and Trenton Rhodes swept in doubles for CdM, while Oliver Kim and Grant Brown also won three doubles sets.

CdM finished the regular season 15-4, 8-2 in league. The Sea Kings finished in second place behind league champion University.

CdM competes in the Pacific Coast League individuals tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Beckman High.

Newport Harbor 12, Edison 6

HUNTINGTON BEACH — David Sharpe and Sam Leeman swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sailors in the Sunset League regular-season finale on Monday.

David Lee and Andy Myers swept at No. 1 and No .2 singles, respectively for Newport Harbor (9-14, 2-8 in league).

The Sailors compete in the Sunset League individual finals on Wednesday at Huntington Beach. Lee and Mark Schaefer are the No. 2-seeded team in doubles. Myers is the No. 5 seed in singles.
