College Roundup: UCI falls to UNLV

LAS VEGAS — Keston Hiura went three for five with two runs batted in and two runs for the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Evan Cassolato was two for five with one RBI and one run for UCI (25-17).

Shaun Vetrovec, a Newport Harbor High product, took the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings to fall to 2-4.

UNLV improved to 20-24.

UCI begins a three-game series with UCLA on Friday at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Big West Conference Championship

SIMI VALLEY — UC Irvine finished eighth among nine teams in the 54-hole tournament concluded Wednesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.

Senior Jacob Schulze and sophomore David Kim led UCI, tying for 20th at 220. Kim shot one-over-par 73 in the final round.

Redshirt freshman Chris Parkinson was 24th at 222,

The Anteaters’ team total of 891 was 29 shots behind victorious UC Riverside.

Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara was medalist at four-under 212.
