Boys’ Volleyball: Newport Harbor, CdM, Costa Mesa Sage Hill in playoffs

For the first time in five years, the Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team enters the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs as one of the top four seeds.

The Sailors were rewarded on Friday with a No. 3 seed for sharing the Sunset League title, marking the first time that they’ve finished first in league since 2011.

Joining Newport Harbor in the Division 1 playoffs is Corona del Mar. Costa Mesa is in Division 2 and Sage Hill is in Division 4.

Newport Harbor (21-7) plays host to Bellflower St. John Bosco (13-10), an at-large team from the Trinity League, in the first round on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Sea Kings (23-5), the Pacific Coast League champions, are at home in the first round with Encino Crespi (11-9), which finished fourth in the Mission League, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Costa Mesa (16-3), the Orange Coast League runner-up, entertains El Modena (11-10), the No. 2 team from the North Hills League, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Sage Hill (6-12), the fourth-place team from the Academy League, has a wild-card match at home against Lakewood Mayfair (9-7), which placed fourth in the Suburban League, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
