High School Roundup: Newport’s Ayla Spitz breaks 100 free school record

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor freshman Ayla Spitz shattered the school record in the 100-yard freestyle and helped the 200 free relay team also set the school record Friday at Golden West College.

Spitz won the 100 free in 50.22 seconds, besting the previous record of 51.05 set by Kate Klippert in 2009. Ayla Spitz, Kili Skibby, Kaela Whelan and Zoe Spitz touched in the 200 free relay in 1:37.97, placing third in the race but breaking the old Newport Harbor record of 1:38.20 from 2013.

Ayla Spitz also won the backstroke in 55.60.

Zoe Spitz was second in the 50 free (23.82) for the Sailors, and fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.86).

Edison won the meet.

Sailors who qualify will compete at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries Thursday at Riverside City College.

Academy League finals

LA PALMA — Sage Hill, led by senior Carly Lubowe, finished tied for fourth as a team Thursday at Kennedy High.

Lubowe teamed with junior Emily Lassiter, sophomore Hannah Leigh and freshman Chloe Hoch in setting the school record in the 200 yard free relay. Lassiter also has set a Sage school record in the 50 free, in 26.03 seconds.

At league finals, Lubowe placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.68.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor placed fourth as a team Friday at Golden West College.

Sawyer Farmer was third in the 50 free (25.27 seconds), and fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.37). Jason Grew was fourth in the 100 free (47.48). The Sailors also finished third in both of the freestyle relays.

Los Alamitos won the meet.

Sailors who qualify will compete at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries Thursday at Riverside City College.

Academy League finals

LA PALMA — Sage Hill School captured its second straight league title Thursday at Kennedy High.

Senior Harry Miller and Taras Polakoff were co-meet MVPs for the Lightning. Miller won the 50-yard freestyle in a school record 23.23 seconds and also won the 100 free (51.37). Polakoff set the meet record in winning both the 100 butterfly (53.89) and 100 backstroke (55.04).

The Sage Hill 200 medley relay team of Ethan Vovan, Jason Schreiber, Polakoff and Miller set the meet, league and school record in 1:42.09, a CIF Southern Section Division 2 consideration time.

The Division 2 preliminaries are Friday at 9 a.m. at Riverside City College. Schreiber and Polakoff have already qualified in their individual events.

BASEBALL

Estancia 4, Laguna Beach 2

Colin Gardner delivered a grand slam in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead runs for the Eagles’ in the Orange Coast League game on Friday.

Spencer Stern (5-4) pitched six innings giving up two earned runs on four hits to pick up the win for Estancia (16-11, 7-6 in league)

Gardner was two for four with a double, home run and four RBIs, Connor Brown one for two with a run, Jeff Alai one for three and Tyler Ross two for three with a run.
