College Roundup: OCC women claim state swim crown

LOS ANGELES — Orange Coast College sophomore Rebecca Aguilar won the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors and lead the Pirates to the team crown at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Swimming and Diving Championships completed Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Alexa Clayfield won the 200 and 400 individual medley events, while Sierra Cox (500 free) and Hannah Veseth (100 breaststroke) rounded out the individual event winners for OCC, which won five relays.

It is the 18th state crown for the OCC women, their first since 2012. OCC’s 569 points were 232 better than runner-up Sierra.

“These results came from discipline and hard work and I couldn’t be more proud of our team.” OCC Coach Anthony Iacopetti said.

Aguilar posted times of 23.33 seconds (50), 50.59 (100) and 1 minute, 51.15 seconds (200), while Clayfield went 2:06.62 in the 200 IM and 4:31.85 in the 400 IM, just missing the state record by .12 seconds in the latter.

Cox’s winning time was 5:02.27, while Veseth won her event in 1:06.07.

Clayfield (2:02.53 in the 200 backstroke), Veseth (2:26,71 in the 200 breaststroke) and Cox (1:54.43 in the 200 free) finished second.

Third-place finishers included Cox (17:38.35 in the 1,650 free), Nacinda Paap (1:06.95 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:27.94 in the 200 breaststroke), Lexi Hill (2:10.19 in the 100 butterfly), and Lauren Weins (57.70 in the 100 back).

Aguilar was part of wins in the 800 free, 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley relays, while Clayfield and Cox were also part of four relay wins.

Aguilar won two individual state titles as a freshman.

Paap was in on three relay wins for OCC.

MEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

LOS ANGELES — Orange Coast College sophomore Jonathan Panchak set state records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events to help the Pirates finish third as a team at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Swimming and Diving Championships completed Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Panchak went 54.35 seconds in the 100 breaststroke and 1:58.37 in the 200 breaststroke. He was also second in the 200 individual medley (1:48.58).

Freshman Diego Pabalan (1:50.87 in the 100 butterfly) and freshman Sooud Altayyar (4:29.46 in the 500 free) were additional winners for OCC.

Altayyar was second in the 200 free (1:39.12), while OCC sophomore Tyler Connors was third in the 400 IM (4:04.63).

OCC’s team total of 382 points trailed Sierra (543.5) and Golden West (508).

BASEBALL

GSAC Tournament

SANTA BARBARA — Vanguard University lost its first two games and was ousted from the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday at Westmont College.

The No. 13-ranked Lions, whose second-place regular-season finish was their best in conference since 1993, was defeated, 8-4, on Tuesday by No. 4-seeded Menlo. Vanguard (37-15-1) fell, 8-0, to No. 3-seeded The Master’s in Monday’s opening round.

Vanguard, which lost its first two games in the GSAC Tournament last season, then went on to advance to the NAIA World Series, is expected to earn an at-large berth into the NAIA Tournament.

The Lions never led in two GSAC Tournament games, as seven of the nine pitchers they used allowed at least one run.

Senior Sean Isaac, the GSAC Pitcher of the Year who had won his previous nine starts and was 15-1 in his previous 16 decisions dating back to last season, allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven innings to absorb the loss against TMC. He fell to 13-2.

Vanguard managed just five hits in Monday’s setback, two by junior leadoff man Brandon Sandoval.

Michael Sexton and Nick Covello each hit their 15th home run of the season for TMC.

Against Menlo, senior center fielder Paul Keating homered and drove in three runs, while junior right fielder Brock Eissman hit a solo homer for the Lions, who had six hits and committed three errors.

Junior Chris Lumanlan started for the Lions and allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Senior closer Michael Jordan pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Lions on Tuesday.

UC Irvine 9, San Diego 3

Mitchell Holland went three for five with two runs batted in and John Brontsema was two for four with two RBIs for the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Keston Hiura and Adam Alcantara both had two hits and one RBI for the winners, for whol Daniel Alvarez earned the win with 4 2/3 innigns of scoreless relief. Alvarez allowed two hits and struck out two without issuing a walk.

Hiura is now hitting .479 in nonconference games (56 for 117).

UCI begins a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Friday.

MEN’S GOLF

SoCal Regional

MURRIETA — Orange Coast College freshman Marcus De La Rosa finished tied for fourth to help the Pirates finish fourth on Monday at Bear Creek Golf and Country Club.

The Pirates, who won the Orange Empire Conference crown with De La Rosa claiming the conference individual title, earned the last of four Southern California bids in the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championship, set for Monday at Desert Island Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs.

De La Rosa shot 72-74-146 to finish two over par, four shots behind medalist Will Barnett of Canyons.

Conor Hurst (tied for 11th at 152), Jordan Meas, Jeremy Dorff and Justin Collins (all tied for 29th at 159) also stood out for OCC.
