College Roundup: OCC’s Sims takes third in 100 hurdles

State championships

SAN DIEGO — Orange Coast College sophomore Taylor Sims finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.34 seconds at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championships on Saturday at San Diego Mesa College.

OCC freshmen Alyssa Allen and Bethani Heising finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,500. Allen finished in 4 minutes, 42.21 seconds, while Heising posted a time of 4:46.65.

Pirates sophomore Jessica Reyes was eighth in the 5,000 with a time of 178:40.31.

OCC was 16th in the team standings.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

State championships

SAN DIEGO — Orange Coast College freshman Gabe Warner finished fourth in the 400 meters and seventh in the 200 in the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championships on Saturday at San Diego Mesa College.

Warner’s time was 47.73 seconds. He broke a 49-year-old school record in the Southern California Regional prelims (47.5), then topped that in the regional finals with a mark of 47.05.

Warner’s time in the 200 final on Saturday was 21.57.

Warner also teamed with David Dambre, Jonathan Clayborne and Tommy Duong to finish eighth in the 400 relay with a time of 42.25.

OCC was 21st in the team standings.

BASEBALL

UC Santa Barbara 9, UC Irvine 5

Adam Alcantara and Cole Kreuter were both two for four with one run batted in to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Sunday.

UCI (29-24, 9-12 in conference) led, 5-0, after two innings and starting pitcher Cameron Bishop allowed three runs on six hits and struck out 11 in seven innings.

But after UCI reliever Ben Ritchey allowed two runs in the eighth, the Gauchos (35-16-1, 12-9) scored four unearned runs off closer Calvin Faucher in the ninth to claim the rubber game of the series.

Evan Cassolato was two for five for UCI, which had nine hits.

Austin Bush was three for five with a home run and seven runs batted in for the winners.

UCI, in eighth place in the nine-team conference, concludes its season with a three-game series against Big West visitor Cal State Northridge, beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
