In an entertaining contest that probably shortened the life spans of the coaching staff on both sides of the field, the Pirates (1-0-1) scored first when Marquez picked up a loose ball sent in by Taylor Kane and buried his first shot on goal to put OCC up, 1-0.

Just three minutes later, a breakdown on defense led to a 50-yard breakaway by LBCC’s Carlos Maldonado and the freshman forward didn’t make a mistake, beating the Pirates’ goalkeeper and tying the match at 1.

Less than a minute later, a well-played exchange between Coast’s GK Osiel Porcayo and midfielder Garen Balikcioglu led to another goal-scoring connection from Kane to Marquez, putting Coast back in front.

But just six minutes later, a foul inside the LBCC scoring box led to a penalty kick opportunity and Jamie Salazar cashed in the opportunity and the match was once again deadlocked heading into halftime.

In the 65th minute, a nice pass to open space by Balikcioglu helped lead to another Marquez scoring opportunity and the sophomore from Costa Mesa HS did not miss, notching this third goal of the game for a 3-2 Pirate advantage.

Just two minutes later Brett Haney found Marquez breaking away from the defense and he showed off his speed to outrun the back line and score his fourth goal of the night.

It became 5-2 when Nick Cardenas was taken down on a breakaway opportunity and Kane buried the PK opportunity in the 79th minute.

LBCC capped off the scoring on a goal by Hector Solis, but the Vikings (0-3-1) would not get any closer.

Porcayo finished with six saves, while LBCC netminder, Saul Ocampo, notched five saves.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Rio Hondo College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC’s next home matchup will be on Tuesday, Sept. 13 against Norco College, beginning at 3 p.m.
