College Roundup: Vanguard men’s soccer falls to The Master’s

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 1, Vanguard 0 (OT)

SANTA CLARITA – The visiting Lions, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, suffered their first loss in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday.

The Master’s (5-2-1, 1-0 in conference) scored in the 106th minute, late in the second overtime, to pull off the upset.

Both teams had 12 shots and Vanguard goalkeeper Brandon Gomez made six saves.

Vanguard fell to 5-1, 0-1.

Golden West 4, Cypress 1

CYPRESS — Anthony Saldana had two goals and one assist to lead the visiting Rustlers in the Orange Empire Conference game on Tuesday.

Golden West is now 5-0-3, 1-0-1 in conference.

Cypress is 3-5, 0-2.

Orange Coast 2, Santiago Canyon 2

The Pirates (3-2-2, 1-0-1 in Orange Empire Conference), who outshot the Hawks, 16-12, used a long send-in off the foot of Cristian Montillo, which was deflected into the back of the net off a redirect by teammate Garen Balikcioglu with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time for the tie.

In the 36th minute, the Pirates connected beautifully on passes to get out of the defensive zone. The hard work paid off when Balikcioglu sent a perfect side-foot pass to teammate Jack Slavik and the sophomore forward one-timed a rocket shot into the back of the net, tying the match at 1.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE — UC Irvine’s Kaley Inn and Camille Wagg both finished tied for 11th to lead the Anteaters to a fifth-place finish in the event completed Tuesday at Almaden Country Club.

UCI’s team 54-hole total of 905 was 23 behind victorious BYU.

UCI’s Samantha Chan (71-82-79) and Breanne Jones (76-76-80) were tied for 29th at 232.

The ‘Eaters’ Avery French tied for 50th (237).

UCI competes in the New Mexico State tournament Oct. 3-5.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Santiago Canyon 2, Orange Coast 0

ORANGE – The host Coyotes improved to 7-0, 3-0 in conference in the Orange Empire Conference match on Tuesday.

Orange Coast fell to 4-3-1, 1-2.

Utah 1, UC Irvine 0

SALT LAKE CITY — The host Utes scored in the 51st minute to halt the Anteaters’ four-game winning streak.

UCI posted an 11-10 advantage in shots, including three each by Kiana Palacios and Grayson Galbraith.

UCI (8-2) visits Santa Clara on Thursday.

Utah is 5-2-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Westmont def. Vanguard

Juanae Johnson and Jessica Chase had seven kills each, but No. 3-ranked Westmont swept the nonconference match, 25-8, 25-19, 25-9 on Tuesday.

Vanguard dropped to 5-11.

Westmont improved to 16-0.
