Nealy memorial service on Sunday
A memorial service for Bob Nealy, one of UC Irvine’s first All-Americans, is scheduled for Sunday in San Clemente.
Nealy, a water polo standout at UCI who died earlier this month, was one of the first two Anteaters student-athletes to earn All-American honors, sharing that distinction with teammate Pat Glasgow in 1965, the program’s inaugural year.
Nealy, inducted into the UCI Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, led the 1965 Anteaters with 38 goals and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
He competed in swimming in the 1965-66 season and was one of five Anteaters to compete in the National AAU Indoor Championships in Tampa, Fla.
In the 1966-67 season, Nealy earned All-American honors in swimming and competed with Steve Farmer, Bob Sharp and Dave Belknap to win a national title in the 400x100-yard freestyle relay that set a then-collegiate record of 3:14.9.
In the fall of 1967, Nealy earned All-American honors once again in water polo as he scored 26 goals for a UCI team that won the West Coast Championships and finished 18-4.
The service will be held at San Clemente Presbyterian Church, 119 Avenida De La Estrella, in San Clemente, beginning at 3:30p.m. Recommended dress is California casual.
Nealy is survived by his wife, Sara, his son, Trevor, and his sisters, Judi Nealy and Susan Lorentzen.
