Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High junior Ben Wilson won the individual title on Saturday at Central Park, helping the Sailors finish second as a team.

Wilson finished in 15 minutes, 12.9 seconds on the three-mile course. He is the first Newport Harbor boys’ league champion since Rex Nelson in 2007.

Senior Erik Herrera was eighth in 15:45, and junior Mark Fields was 14th in 16:09. Freshman Alexis Garcia (15th, 16:11), junior Seanliam McCarthy (22nd, 16:36), junior Anthony Agama (26th, 16:41) and senior Sean Arnold (36th, 17:00) also competed for Newport Harbor. Huntington Beach won the team title.

By finishing second in league, the Newport Harbor boys qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries, to be held Nov. 14 at the new Riverside City Cross Country course.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High senior Emily Bacon was second individually with a time of 18 minutes, 12.2 seconds on Saturday at Central Park.

Newport Harbor’s girls finished third at league finals but fourth place overall in league, when factoring in the league preview meet. Bacon will advance as an individual at the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries, held Nov. 14 at the new Riverside City Cross Country course.

Sailors’ freshman Mia Matsunami placed eighth at league finals in 18:54, while senior Holly Clemence was 22nd in 19:52. Freshman Claire Bacon (30th, 21:22), senior Johana Camberos (33rd, 21:34) and senior Erika Madrigal (35th, 22:05) also competed for Newport Harbor.

Edison won the team title.

Finis Memorial Cup

SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar High finished in fourth place after losing a pair of matches Saturday at Bellarmine Prep.

The Sea Kings lost to Coronado, 10-9, in the semifinals and to Orange Lutheran, 14-11, in the third-place game.

Brendan Hack had four goals for CdM (18-7) against Orange Lutheran, Jon Polos scored three and Foster Hoose had two goals. Will Rodosky (three assists) and Tamir Avital also scored.

Hack and Rodosky (four assists) each had four goals in the semifinals, and Polos had the other goal. Matt Moran made 15 saves.

CdM, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays at Irvine on Tuesday in its Pacific Coast League finale.

Estancia 17, Westminster 7

Joseph Carrillo scored five goals for the Eagles in Friday’s nonleague regular-season finale at Estancia High.

Chris DeFrenza scored three, and Victor Godfrey, Brett Cooke and Jason Chesemore all had two goals. Henry Jimenez, Kobi White and Jonathan Andrade also scored, and Eizik Leyva made seven saves.

Estancia (11-17), which finished third in the Orange Coast League, will play in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs that begin Nov. 11.
