WHITTIER — Newport Harbor High advanced to the “EFGH” Division semifinals with a win and a tie Saturday at Whittier College.
The Sailors tied La Serna, 2-2, before getting past Malibu, 3-0.
Emily Johnson had a goal and an assist against La Serna, with freshman Skylynn Rodriguez also scoring.
Sianna Siemonsma scored all three Sailors’ goals against Malibu, all coming in the last seven minutes of the match. Johnson, Sienna Ward and Sadie Pitchess had assists, while Ryah Montano made three saves to preserve the shutout.
Newport Harbor (3-0-1) will play La Quinta in the “EFGH” Division semifinals next Saturday at 11 a.m., back at Whittier College.
Best in the West tournament
Estancia went 1-0-1 in “ABCD” Division pool play Saturday at Estancia High, but failed to move on to the semifinals in the the tournament’s top division due to the goals against tiebreaker.
The Eagles tied Brea Olinda, 1-1, before getting past Steele Canyon of San Diego, 3-2.
Katarina Freiberger scored against Brea Olinda, while goalie Monique Mendoza made some key saves in the second half.
Freiberger, Desiree Mendoza (penalty kick) and Izzy Cruz all scored against Steele Canyon, Cruz netting the game-winner with two minutes left in the game.
Estancia is now 3-0-1.
Girls’ Basketball
Pacifica 57, Newport Harbor 39: Lisa Hamilton had 12 points and 19 rebounds, but the Sailors (5-4) could not recover from a sluggish start on offense.
The Mariners (7-1) won the opening frame, 15-2, cruising to the Soaring Flight Division championship of the Hawk Holiday Classic on Saturday at Ocean View High.
Pacifica’s Mercedes Robles led all scorers with 19 points.
Lexi Alvarez paced the Sailors with 17 points, adding six rebounds and three steals.
Newport Harbor beat Santa Ana Valley, Rancho Alamitos, and Laguna Hills to reach the final.
