Boys’ Water Polo: Five locals on first team in OCL
Costa Mesa High seniors Ivan Shikhelman and Jorge Miranda, as well as junior Jacob Petersen, have all earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ water polo.
Estancia juniors Jason Chesemore and Kyle Fitzgerald also were first-team all-league selections.
Shikhelman, a goalie, made 314 saves for Costa Mesa. He helped the Mustangs go 20-9 and finish second in league before falling to Montebello, 11-10, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. The 314 saves rank Shikhelman second in the Costa Mesa single-season record book.
Miranda led the team and the league with 96 goals, adding 54 assists and 53 steals. Petersen, a center, was second on the team in goals (76) and steals (57) and also led the team in drawn ejections.
Chesemore scored a team-best 86 goals for Estancia (12-18), which finished third in league to advance to CIF for the first time since 2010. The Eagles beat Mark Keppel, 13-7, in a Division 3 wild-card game before falling at top-seeded Murrieta Valley, 20-2, in the first round.
Fitzgerald was second on Estancia with 66 goals.
Estancia seniors Victor Godfrey and Chris DeFrenza earned second-team all-league accolades, as did Costa Mesa sophomore Augustus Cunningham and freshman Caedmon Fisher.
