For years, the Daily Pilot has put together Dream Teams for various sports to recognize the best local players. With the Daily Pilot expanding its sports coverage into Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Fountain Valley this fall, it has made the selection process even more exciting.

Having more schools gives us the chance to highlight more players.

In the two fall sports that I cover, football and girls’ volleyball, those Dream Teams are usually ready for publication by now, but the seasons for two football teams and two girls’ volleyball teams turned out long and successful.

The Edison and Corona del Mar football programs made CIF Southern Section finals appearances in their respective divisions on Dec. 2, and on the same day, the Edison and Huntington Beach girls’ volleyball teams played each other with a trip to the CIF State Division I finals on the line.

Those four teams alone boast so many quality players. There is an abundance of talent in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach and Fountain Valley. As a result, this year the Dream Teams for football and girls’ volleyball will have two teams, a first team and a second team, much like the all-league teams.

Look out for the Dream Teams starting next week. We plan to run the football edition in next Friday’s Coastal sports section, while the girls’ volleyball one will come out Sunday on Christmas Day.

Sunset vs. Trinity

The Sunset League vs. Trinity League Baseball Challenge is back for a second year. Recent history says one of these teams will end up playing for a CIF Southern Section title.

Three out of the last four section championship games in the top division have featured two Sunset League teams, Huntington Beach in 2015, and Marina in 2013, and from the Trinity League, Santa Margarita in 2014. The Oilers and Eagles won titles.

Before any championship run begins, the teams from the Sunset League and Trinity League will square off in exhibition games.

Below are the matchups for the upcoming Sunset League vs. Trinity League Baseball Challenge:

Jan. 21

Santa Margarita at Los Alamitos, 10 a.m.

Servite at Fountain Valley, 10 a.m.

Jan. 27

St. John Bosco at Huntington Beach, 2:45 p.m.

Feb. 1

Orange Lutheran at Edison, 3 p.m.

Feb. 4

A year ago, Marina finished atop the Sunset League, followed by Huntington Beach, Edison, Newport Harbor, Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley.

In the Trinity League, JSerra placed first, while Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei shared second. Santa Margarita was fourth, Servite fifth and St. John Bosco sixth.
