If you want to catch some top-level lacrosse, head to Orange Coast College on Saturday.

The Pacific Coast Shootout comes to town for the fourth straight year, and the latest edition has Virginia and Cornell playing an NCAA Division I men’s exhibition game at LeBard Stadium at 6 p.m.

Corona del Mar High boys’ lacrosse coach G.W. Mix came up with the idea of bringing college lacrosse to the OC to promote the sport. The event brings out a big crowd, filling up the stadium, which can hold 6,500 fans.

Other programs who have participated in the Pacific Coast Shootout have been Notre Dame, Denver, Maryland and North Carolina.

Tickets for the game are $35 for a reserved seat and $25 for a non-reserved seat.

Best of the West schedule

Huntington Beach, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Edison boys’ volleyball programs are heading to San Diego for the Best of the West Invitational.

The first day of the two-day, 32-team tournament is Friday at Alliant International University. The Oilers, Sea Kings and Sailors are the top teams in their respective pools, Huntington Beach in pool 1, CdM in pool 4 and Newport Harbor in pool 6. The Chargers are the fourth team in pool 3.

Pool-play action begins at 3 p.m. on Friday. The matches are a best-of-three format.

Huntington Beach, the three-time defending Best of the West champion, opens with San Diego Cathedral Catholic. The Oilers’ next two pool-play contests will be against Saddleback Valley Christian and Mater Dei.

The Sea Kings face Thousand Oaks first, followed by Perry, from Gilbert, Ariz., and Clovis Buchanan.

Newport Harbor has Monalua, from Honolulu, Hawaii, and then host San Diego Torrey Pines and Servite.

Edison goes up against Highland, from Gilbert, Ariz., Punahou, from Honolulu, Hawaii, and Valencia of Valencia.

The Sailors and Oilers met in last year’s finale. The two programs went on to share the Sunset League crown.

Tritons keep first season alive

The Pacifica Christian boys’ basketball team experienced something that will only bode well for the first-year varsity program.

With a team starting four freshmen — Dominick Harris, Cal Whitney, Timmy Bahadoor and Josh Sims, the Tritons won their first game by the closest of margins.

The No. 11-seeded Tritons survived a 75-74 win at No. 6 San Fernando Chavez in the opening round of the CIF State Southern California Regional Division V playoffs on Wednesday.

The result means the Tritons will head back to the San Fernando Valley. In the next round, Pacifica Christian (24-4) plays at No. 3 Encino Holy Martyrs Armenian (28-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
