CdM earns success at Laguna Hills Invitational

The Corona del Mar High boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams got off to a great start with two first-place finishers and two team victories at the Laguna Hills Invitational on Saturday.

The meet features division races according to grade.

Individually, CdM’s Raquel Powers won the senior girls’ race in 18 minutes, 55 seconds.

The CdM sophomore boys won their race with the combined efforts of Ian Turner, Josh Means, Joey Cianfrani, Jacob Krantz and Duncan Taylor.

Julia Tung of the Sea Kings led the way for the CdM freshman girls, winning her race in 19:54. Assisting her in the team win were runners Maya Buchwald, Anna Wilde, Kyla Ramirez and Carrie Sullivan.

Runners placing in the top 40 in their race received medals. CdM had 24 runners medal.

The Sea Kings next compete in the Sunny Hills Invitational at Craig Park in Fullerton on Sept. 23.

Newport Harbor strong

Newport Harbor High’s Mark Field finished second in the boys’ senior race in 15:51.

In the boys’ sophomore race, Alexis Garcia for the Sailors took second in 15:49. Newport Harbor’s Luke Downing was 13th in 16:48 and teammate Michael Davey was 16th in 16:55.

In the boys’ junior race Newport Harbor’s Mikael Campo was 24th in 17:17.

The Sailors’ Elliott Harrington finished 12th in the boys’ freshman race in 17:55.

Newport Harbor’s Mia Matsunami took third in the girls’ sophomore race in 18:36 and teammate Claire Bacon was 26th at 20:36.
