Garbers is league MVP again

Corona del Mar High senior quarterback Chase Garbers took home the Pacific Coast League MVP award for the second straight year for lifting the football team to its fifth straight undefeated league crown and its first trip to the CIF Southern Section finals since 2013.

Garbers, who is heading to Cal to play football, completed 254 of 370 passes for 3,895 yards and 47 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. The completions, yards and touchdowns are all CdM single-season records.

Garbers, a three-time first-team selection, also carried the ball 114 times for 582 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Garbers highlights one of nine players from CdM (12-2, 5-0 in league) making the first team. The others helping the Sea Kings reach the Division 4 championship game against Chatsworth Sierra Canyon were senior defensive end Bryce Clabaugh, the league Defensive MVP, senior center Arwin Rahmatpanah, junior wide receiver TaeVeon Le, Jaydin Moses, a senior linebacker and running back, senior defensive end Teddy Barber, senior cornerback Cameron Kormos, senior linebacker Mickey Quinn, senior receiver Billy Shaw, and junior kicker Max Casper.

The No. 3-seeded Sea Kings lost to Sierra Canyon, 36-35, in double overtime at Granada Hills High.

Clabaugh recorded 12.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. He totaled 74 tackles, one forced fumble and one blocked field goal.

Rahmatpanah, a two-time first-team member, anchored CdM’s offense, which averaged 286.4 passing yards and 183.9 rushing yards per game.

Le finished with 78 receptions for 1,294 yards and 22 touchdowns. All three stats are CdM single-season records.

Moses, a repeat first-team pick, made 81 tackles, intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and defended one pass.

Moses rushed 54 times for 396 yards and six touchdowns, and had 13 receptions for 233 yards and four touchdowns.

Barber, who made the first team for the second straight time, registered 11.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss. He totaled 57 tackles.

Kormos had 40 tackles, three interceptions, 22 passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Quinn amassed 98 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and four passes defensed.

Shaw caught 40 passes for 697 yards and eight touchdowns.

Casper converted seven of nine field-goal attempts and 68 of 74 extra-point kicks. He had 37 touchbacks.

CdM’s second-team members included junior running back JT Murphy, senior defensive back Dylan Tucker, senior receiver Reese Perez, senior offensive lineman Denham King, and junior linebackers Jack Fairon and Clyde Moore.

The league Offensive MVP was Woodbridge senior running back Connor McBride.
