Baseball: Super CIF Div. 6 Player of Year

Sage Hill School junior Brett Super was named CIF Southern Section Division 6 Player of the Year in baseball after lifting the Lightning to the Division 6 title, the program’s first section crown.

Super, a pitcher and third baseman, was among four local players who earned All-CIF honors.

Joining Super as Division 6 honorees were Sage Hill freshmen Edward Pelc, a right fielder, and pitcher Ashwin Chona.

Corona del Mar senior pitcher Evan Larsen was on the Division 3 team.

Sage Hill’s Dominic Campeau was Division 6 Coach of the Year. In Campeau’s third season at the helm of the Lightning, Sage Hill finished 28-1, 10-0 in the Academy League. Sage won an Orange County record 27 straight games and went undefeated in league for the second straight season.

Super, a two-time All-CIF selection, went 13-0 with a 0.51 earned-run average and two saves. The right-hander struck out 133 and walked only 20 in 97 innings. He did not allow a run in his final 41 innings of the season.

Super threw a three-hitter in No. 1-seeded Sage Hill’s 9-0 victory over No. 2 Crean Lutheran in the section title game at UC Riverside.

Super, the Academy League MVP and third-team All-Orange County member, threw a perfect game and a no-hitter. He finished with eight complete games and six shutouts.

Super also batted .268 with three home runs and 24 runs batted in. He finished with four triples, two doubles, 20 runs and 14 walks.

Pelc, a first-team All-Academy League pick, hit a team-best .489 with one home run and 21 RBIs. He had a .600 on-base percentage and a .677 slugging percentage.

Pelc led the team in hits (44), runs (38), triples (five), walks (25) and stolen bases (23).

Chona, a left-hander, finished 12-0 with a 0.65 ERA and two saves. The first-team All-Academy League pick had 85 strikeouts and 20 walks in 65 innings.

For the second straight year, Larsen, a two-time All-CIF pick and two-time Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, led CdM to a second-place finish in the PCL and the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Larsen, who is bound for Cal State Fullerton, posted a 9-2 record with a 1.07 ERA and one save. In 781/3 innings, he finished with 92 strikeouts and 17 walks.

The second-team All-Orange County member went the distance in 10 of his 11 starts for CdM (21-5, 11-4 in league). The right-hander threw two shutouts.

Larsen batted .367 with four RBIs and two doubles.

Larsen made the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 49th Orange County All-Star Baseball Game for seniors and the 20th annual Ryan Lemmon Senior Showcase game that features the Pacific Coast League against the Freeway League.
