BOISE – UC Irvine senior defender Kelsey Texeira scored on a header in the 110th minute to help the Anteaters defeat San Jose State, 2-1, in overtime of the first women’s soccer game of the Boise State Bronco Invitational Friday at Boise State.

UCI starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2011.

Texeira recorded an assist on UCI’s first goal, when Noel Baham scored to erase a 1-0 deficit in the 88th minute.

Sophomore Lili Andino was also credited with an assist on Baham’s goal.

Texeira’s goal, her second of the season for UCI, which has eight goals in three games, came in the second overtime period. She converted an assist from Reema Bzeih.

San Jose State (1-1-1) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

UCI meets Boise State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out the tournament.

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 10-ranked Lions were edged by the No. 2-ranked hosts in a nonconference game Friday.

Danyelle Allen scored an unassisted goal in the 51st minute to pull the Lions even, 1-1, but the hosts netted the game-winner in the 66th minute to improve to 2-0.

Vanguard is 0-2.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The visiting Anteaters dropped their season opener for the first time since 2004 at the hands of the No. 9-ranked Fighting Irish in the Mike Berticceli Memorial Tournament on Friday.

Notre Dame posted a 22-7 edge in shots and its goalkeeper made just one save.

UCI keeper Elliott Farmer had a career-best eight saves.

UCI had allowed just four goals combined in its previous 11 openers, eight of which were shutouts.

The ‘Eaters face Indiana on Sunday to conclude the tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

LOS ANGELES – The Anteaters dropped their season opener, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19, to Santa Clara in the Baden Invitational on Friday at USC’s Galen Center.

Victoria Dennis led UCI with 13 kills, while Harlee Kekauoha added 10 to go with a team-best eight digs.

UCI faces Marquette at noon on Saturday, then takes on host USC at 8 p.m.

Big Sky Challenge

BUTTE, Mont. – Vanguard University, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA preseason poll, fell to 1-6 after losing two tournament matches Friday.

The Lions fell to College of Idaho, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-19, after dropping a 25-15, 25-17, 25-15, decision to Montana Tech earlier Friday.

Aubryn Coale led the Lions with 13 kills against Idaho, followed by Shaylen Larson-Piper with 11 to go with three blocks.

Sam Rice had 21 digs against Idaho.

Larson-Piper had a team-best seven kills against Montana Tech, against which Vanguard hit .021 as a team.

The Lions continue in the tournament Saturday, facing Great Falls at noon and Eastern Oregon at 4 p.m.
