Marina hires Hess as baseball coach

After Marina High lost its baseball coach four days into the New Year, the Vikings found a new coach on the final day of January.

Marina closed out the month by hiring Toby Hess on Tuesday, said Michelle Spencer, the school’s athletic director. Hess is taking over for Bob Marshall, who spent 22 seasons at Marina, six in charge, before stepping down for personal reasons.

Hess spent nine of the last 10 years at the helm of Long Beach Poly, going 161-112-1 overall. The Jackrabbits let Hess go after last season, when the program went 16-12 overall and placed fourth in the Moore League at 7-5. The Jackrabbits lost at Edison, 3-2, in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

In 2012, Hess led the Jackrabbits to a Moore League title, their first outright crown since 1968. Hess comes to Marina, which won the Sunset League championship last season for the first time since 2005.
