High School Roundup: Oilers earn share of Sunset League title
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Huntington Beach def. Newport Harbor
Jillian Kim finished with eight kills, helping the host Oilers to a share of first place in the Sunset League with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-17 sweep of the Sailors on Tuesday.
Huntington Beach finished tied atop the league with Edison at 9-1. The Oilers (28-3 overall) will be the league’s No. 1 entry into the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs because it swept Edison and Edison beat Huntington Beach in five sets.
Newport Harbor went 2-8 and will the postseason for the second straight year.
The section playoff pairings will be released on Friday.
Edison def. Marina
Taylor Torchia recorded eight kills for the Chargers, who finished tied for first place in the Sunset League after their 25-15, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14 win at Marina on Tuesday.
The Chargers and Huntington Beach went 9-1 in league.
Edison, which improved to 29-7 overall, finds out on Friday who it opens the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs with next Tuesday.

CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional
ANAHEIM — Corona del Mar High senior Alyaa Abdulghany, the reigning CIF State champion, shot a seven-over-par 78 and did not advance, as the cut was 76 for 36 players at Dad Miller Golf Course on Tuesday.
Abdulghany, bound for USC, was among 140 players, including teammate Gabby Finear, also a senior. Finear shot 84.
Abdulghany won the Pacific Coast League championship on Thursday after 72-69 two-day total on the par-71 San Juan Hills Golf Club course.
Finear was tied for ninth in the PCL finals and won a three-player playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole to advance to the Southern Individual Regional.
Abdulghany and Finear will compete with the CdM team in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division Team Championships at Lakewood Country Club on Monday.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Corona del Mar 18, Irvine 0
Sina Schwenk-Mueller and Grace Jennings swept in doubles for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League finale Tuesday.
Erin Duddy and Katie DeRevere won two doubles sets for CdM (19-0, 10-0 in league), which won the league for the second straight year and is the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1. So did Kayden Fogarty and Stephanie Joynt.
Camellia Edalat swept in singles for CdM, which competes in the league tournament beginning Wednesday at Woodbridge High.
Newport Harbor 14, Huntington Beach 4
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Hannah Blower swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Sunset League finale on the road.
Rachel Davis won twice in singles, while Eva Newsom swept in doubles with partners Taryn Anderson and Madi Rettew.
The Sailors (11-8, 7-3 in league) finished third in the league, behind Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley.
Newport Harbor competes in the league tournament beginning Wednesday at Fountain Valley High. Blower is the fifth seed in singles, while Anderson and Newsom are the No. 1 seed in doubles. Lauren Lipkowski and Amra Barton are the No. 4 seed in doubles, while Megan Carey and Ally Harano are the No. 6 seed in doubles.
Academy League tournament
IRVINE — Top-seeded Michelle Hung and Nicole Condas from Sage hill reached the doubles semifinals with a win Tuesday at Crean Lutheran High.
Hung and Condas had a bye before defeating a team from Oxford Academy, 6-1, 6-1. They will play Sage teammates Isabella Deckey and Morgan Mann, who reached the semifinals by beating a team from Crean Lutheran, 6-0, 6-0, before upsetting the No. 4 seed from St. Margaret’s, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
In the bottom bracket, No. 3 seeded Cat Kiani and Maya Byrd of Sage Hill had a bye before beating a team from St. Margaret’s, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. They will play the No. 2 seed from St. Margaret’s in the semifinals.
Doubles semifinals begin Thursday at 3 p.m. at Sage Hill. The singles tournament begins Wednesday at Cerritos Sports Park.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Corona del Mar 23, University 7
IRVINE — Jay Morris scored six goals for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game.
Will Klein and Will Ueberroth each scored three goals for the Sea Kings, while Will Rodosky and Tanner Pulice each scored twice for CdM.
CdM (18-6, 8-0 in league), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays host to Northwood on Thursday.
