High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ soccer edges Edison

Newport Harbor 2, Edison 1
Seniors Sianna Siemonsma and Sienna Ward scored for the Sailors, who played spoiler in Thursday’s Sunset League game at Estancia High.
Cassidy Helenihi scored a penalty kick for Edison (6-3 in league), which lost its third straight game and fell half a game behind Los Alamitos (6-2-1) in league with one game to play. Los Al plays at Edison in the league finale Tuesday night, and the Chargers need to win to claim the league title.
Newport Harbor, which got a standout performance from goalie Bryana Esperza, is 14-4-3, 5-4 in league. The Sailors are in fourth place, a half-game behind Huntington Beach, and conclude the regular season against Fountain Valley on Tuesday at Costa Mesa High.
It was the Sailors’ first win over Edison in five years.

IRVINE — Trinity Rodman scored the game-winning penalty kick goal in the 78th minute in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League game.
Ally Lozano made six saves for CdM (18-0-3, 6-0-2 in league). The Sea Kings, top-ranked in CIF Southern Section Division 2, have a first-place showdown against Northwood on Tuesday at CdM at 3:15 p.m.
Huntington Beach 2, Fountain Valley 1 (OT)
Freshman Xolani Hodel scored the winning header goal off a Rachel Harris free kick in Thursday’s Sunset League game at Fountain Valley High.
Jenna Prince also scored in the first half for Huntington Beach (15-7-5, 5-3-1 in league).
BOYS’ SOCCER
Corona del Mar 1, University 1
Kyle Mabwa scored for the second straight match, as the host Sea Kings remained unbeaten in the Pacific Coast League on Thursday.
Matt Katz assisted on Mabwa’s goal.
The Sea Kings are atop the league at 6-0-2, ahead of University, which is 6-1-1.
CdM closes out league play next week on the road with contests against Northwood and Irvine.
