High School Roundup: HB girls’ basketball takes share of Sunset League title

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 63, Newport Harbor 26

Frankie Wade-Sanchez had 19 points, and Kaylyn Nakaji added 17 to crown the Oilers (19-7, 9-1) as co-champions of the Sunset League.

Huntington Beach tied Los Alamitos for the league title, as the two teams earned road victories against each other.

Angelina Alvarez had 12 points to lead the Sailors (8-17, 2-8).

Los Alamitos 73, Fountain Valley 17

Cailyn Crocker led all scorers with 24 points as the Griffins (20-6, 9-1) earned a share of the Sunset League title.

The Barons finished the season 6-18 overall, 0-10 in league.

Costa Mesa 36, Estancia 35

The Mustangs (10-15, 6-4) escaped a season sweep in the Battle of the Bell on a last-second putback off of an offensive rebound by Katie Belmontes.

Estancia (5-21, 2-8) wins the rivalry by virtue of the margin-of-victory tiebreaker, but Costa Mesa earns the second seed out of the Orange Coast League.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Estancia 3, Costa Mesa 0

Freshman Desiree Mendoza had two goals in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League finale at Estancia High.

Delani Guyot had a goal and an assist for Estancia, while Lexi Osso and Izzy Cruz both had assists.

Estancia finished the regular season 17-5-2, 8-2 in league for second place. Costa Mesa is 1-8 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 21, Estancia 1

The league champion Breakers eased to the win in the Orange Coast League finale for both schools Wednesday at Estancia High.

Laguna Beach, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, improved to 26-0, 4-0 in league.

Julia Paluch scored the goal for Estancia, which finished third in league at 2-2.

Huntington Beach 14, Edison 0

Junior goalie Marina Hyham had a seven-save shutout for the Oilers in Wednesday’s Sunset League match at Newport Harbor High.

Huntington Beach (18-10, 3-2 in league) finished third in league and begins the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs next week.
