High School Roundup: CdM baseball moves to 4-0

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 6, San Juan Hills 5 (eight innings)

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Chazz Martinez helped the Sea Kings rally from a 5-1 deficit in the Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game on Wednesday.

Martinez delivered a triple with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh. Alex Shaddid squeezed in the tying run. In the eighth inning and with the bases loaded, Preston Hartsell grounded in the go-ahead run.

Nolan Dunn earned the win in relief for CdM (4-0), which will play in the Foothill Division championship game on Friday at a site and time to be determined.

The Sea Kings edged Valencia Placentia, 3-2, on Monday. JT Schwartz had two hits and an RBI double, Reece Berger added two hits and a double and Hartsell had an RBI.

Newport Harbor 8, Arlington 6

Clay Liolios drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth with two outs for the Sailors in the nonleague home game on Wednesday.

Relief pitcher Nick Covington shut out Arlington for the final 32/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two to earn his first win.

John Olmstead went two for three with a double and two runs batted in. Cade Seabold was two for four with a double and two RBIs and Cameron Mahaffy also doubled for Newport Harbor.

Western 4, Estancia 2

Jake McIntyre, Brian Rodriguez, Nic Mazur and Jake Covey had one hit each for the Eagles on Wednesday.

McIntyre scored a run and Mazur delivered an RBI for Estancia (2-5), which plays host to Savanna on Friday to close out the Newport Elks Tournament.

Century 5, Costa Mesa 3

Cameron Chapman, Miguel Rodriguez and Omar Munoz drove in one run each for the Mustangs in the nonleague game on Wednesday.

Dylan Schafer, Dominick Santos and Ty Muir also added hits for Costa Mesa.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 12, Dana Hills 6

Kyle Pham swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s nonleague match at CdM.

The doubles teams of Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler, Grant Brown and Trenton Rhodes, as well as Matt Paulsen and John Hart, all won twice.

CdM (4-0) plays host to Los Alamitos in a key match on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 15, Estancia 3

Sam Leeman and Nick Nataupsky swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sailors in the nonleague match at Newport Harbor on Wednesday.

Mark Schaefer and Oscar Tavares swept at No. 2 doubles for Newport Harbor (3-2), which beat Tesoro, 11-7 on Tuesday when David Lee swept at No. 1 singles.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Edison

Brandon Browning had 16 kills to lead the Sea Kings to a 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21 nonleague season-opening win on Wednesday.

Mitch Haly added seven kills and three blocks for CdM.

BOYS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 200, San Juan Hills 208

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Noah Mayne earned medalist honors after carding a 37 for the Sailors in the nonleague match at Marbella Country Club on Wednesday.

Matt Smith (38), Ted Perry (41), Billy Shannon (41) and Campbell Norris (43) also scored for Newport Harbor (1-1).
