High School Roundup: Sage Hill’s Chona throws second straight no-no

Sophomore left-hander Ashwin Chona threw his second straight no-hitter for the host Lightning on Monday, becoming the 16th pitcher to accomplish the feat in the history of the CIF Southern Section.

The game at the Anaheim Lions tournament was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Chona struck out nine and walked one. He also went two for two with one run batted in and a run.

Chona’s previous no-hitter came in a 9-0 win at home against Whitney on March 20. He went seven innings, striking out 13 and walking two.

The last pitcher to toss two consecutive no-hitters was Bethel Christian’s J.R. Chavira in 1997.

Jack Pelc went two for three with three runs and an RBI for Sage Hill (12-0-1).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS — Dayne Chalmers finished with 17 kills in the visiting Sailors’ 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 sweep in a Sunset League match on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor (17-2, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, plays at No. 9 Edison on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Corona del Mar def. Irvine

Patrick Paragas had 22 assists and three aces to help the Sea Kings to a 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 Pacific Coast League win on Tuesday.

Clay Dickinson added eight kills and Kevin Kobrine had seven kills for CdM (14-2, 3-0 in league).

BOYS’ TENNIS

University 14, Corona del Mar 4

Matt Paulsen and John Hart won twice in doubles for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League match at CdM.

The Sea Kings are now 7-3, 2-1 in league.

They also beat Northwood, 12-6, on Monday. The doubles teams of Paulsen and Hart, as well as Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler, and Grant Brown and Luke Muradliyan, all swept.

CdM plays at Irvine on Thursday.

Los Alamitos 11, Newport Harbor 7

LOS ALAMITOS – Mark Schaefer and Sam Leaman swept at No 3 doubles for the Sailors in the Sunset League match.

Andy Myers and David Sharpe won two of three at No. 2 doubles for Newport Harbor (9-3, 1-1 in league), which plays at Edison on Thursday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 185, Edison 203

Ethan Barnes shot two-under-par 33 to lead the Sailors to the Sunset League win on Tuesday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Noah Mayne (35), Campbell Norris (35), Billy Shannon (40) and Ted Terry (42) also scored for Newport Harbor (7-1, 5-1 in league), which plays against Fountain Valley at Mile Square on Thursday.

The Sailors took second place out of 15 teams in the Estancia tournament at Los Lagos on Monday. Arcadia won the event.

Arcadia won it.

Barnes shot one-under 71 to earn 22 points in the stableford scoring format. Mayne (76), Norris (77) and Terry (78) also competed.

Corona del Mar 197, University 217

Clay Seeber shot two-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club on Tuesday.

Guy Clauss (39), Ryan Shih (39), PJ Jenkins (42) and Zach Gladman (43) also scored for CdM (7-2, 3-0 in league).

SOFTBALL

Corona del Mar 14, Costa Mesa 4

Raine Finley went two for two with three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Sea Kings (8-6) over the Mustangs (4-9).

Mallory McCrane also had two hits and picked up the win in the pitching circle.

Brooke Franson, Lauren Oberreiter, Finley, and McCrane all had doubles.
