Boys’ Water Polo: Laguna duo leads way

Laguna Beach High senior goalie Gordon Pike and sophomore Colton Gregory are the Orange Coast League co-MVPs in boys’ water polo this season.

Pike and Gregory are joined by Breakers teammates Camden Benson, Sebastian Jacobs and Larsen McCarroll on the first-team all league. Costa Mesa’s Caedmon Fisher, Augie Cunningham and Jacob Peterson are also first-team selections, as were Estancia’s Jason Chesemore and Victor Castillo.

Pike finished sixth in Orange County with 296 saves for Laguna Beach (21-10). He helped the Breakers win another Orange Coast League title and earn the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. Laguna Beach advanced to the championship game before falling to Santa Margarita, 6-4.

Gregory led the Breakers with 75 goals, adding 15 assists and 36 steals.

Benson, a senior co-captain, had 31 goals, 15 assists and a team-best 53 steals for Laguna. Jacobs, a junior utility player, finished with 43 goals, 23 assists and 47 steals, while McCarroll, a junior center, had 32 goals.

Fisher, a sophomore, led the league with 117 goals for Costa Mesa (22-8), which finished second in league. He added 39 assists and 33 steals. The Mustangs beat Woodbridge, 13-10, in a wild-card game of the Division 3 playoffs before losing at No. 2-seeded Redlands East Valley, 6-2, in the first round.

Cunningham, a junior, finished with 37 goals, 28 assists and 32 steals. Peterson, a senior center, was second on Mesa with 73 goals.

Chesemore and Castillo helped Estancia go 11-11 and 2-2 in league, good for third place. The Eagles lost to Diamond Bar, 14-7, in the wild-card round of the Division 6 playoffs.

Laguna Beach’s Peter Weiland and Judge Washer earned second-team all-league honors, as did Costa Mesa’s Teak Zachary and Tony Shin and Estancia’s Alex Epperson and Cobi White.
