Heptathlon: Day-Monroe denied Olympic berth

EUGENE, Ore. — Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day-Monroe finished fourth in the heptathlon at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on Sunday, just missing making her third Olympic team.

Day-Monroe, was 17 points behind the third and final qualifier, which amounted to less than two seconds in the 800 meters, the last of the seven events at the University of Oregon.

Day-Monroe, 31, a two-time Olympian, finished with 6,385 points. UC Santa Barbara product Barbara Nwaba won the event (6,494), followed by Heather Miller-Koch (6,423) and Kendall Williams (6,402).

Day entered the final day of competition nine points out of third place. She had the second-fastest time in the 800, 2 minutes, 10.87 seconds, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Day-Monroe topped the field in the shot put with a mark of 49 feet, 10 inches. She was second best in the high jump (5-11¼), sixth in the javelin (149-4), ninth in the 100 hurdles (13.60) and the 200 (24.73), and was 10th in the long jump (19-8).
