Briefs: UCI’s In qualifies for U.S. Women’s Amateur

UC Irvine redshirt-junior golfer Kaley In qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur for the second time in her career.

In, who also qualified in 2013, shot a 73 at the Friendly Hills Country Club Tuesday to secure one of seven spots in the Am.

The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 1-7 at the Rolling Hills Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.

In redshirted in 2015-16 and returns to the squad after earning All-Big accolades her first two seasons at UCI.

Two ‘Eaters shine

Former UC Irvine men’s volleyball All-Americans David Smith and Dan McDonnell stood out for the U.S. national team in its four-set triumph over Australia in World League play on Saturday in Rome, Italy.

Smith, a middle blocker, had 14 points on 11 kills and two aces.

McDonnell, also a middle blocker, had 11 points on 11 attacks in his World League debut.

“We were really good in the middle of the court,” said Team USA Coach John Speraw, who coached both Smith and McDonnell at UCI.

Team USA won the match, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20, and swept Italy on Sunday to improve to 5-1 in World League play.

The United States plays host to the next round of World League action, Friday through Sunday in Dallas.

Team USA meets Bulgaria on Friday, Australia on Saturday and Russia on Sunday.

Ex-’Eater wins

Former UC Irvine women’s tennis player Kristina Smith teamed with Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine to win the doubles title at the recent Encore FX Victoria International in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Smith and Guillermo went 4-0 in the doubles bracket.

Smith has competed in Mexico, France, Australia, Great Britain, the U.S. and Canada. She reached the quarterfinals and semifinals in consecutive tournaments in Greece.

She has one singles win in 2016 to go with a 7-2 doubles record.
