Briefs: Browning key for Team USA

Brandon Browning, who will be a junior at Corona del Mar High in the fall, helped the United States youth national team finish second at the NORCECA Boys’ U19 Continental Championship, completed recently in Havana, Cuba.

Browning, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter, shared team-high honors with 17 points in a 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 semifinal win over Mexico on June 28.

Browning started in the final, in which host Cuba prevailed, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11.

It’s runner-up finish helped Team USA qualify for the 2017 FIVB U19 World Championships.

Team USA also included Kyler Presho, a 6-8 middle blocker from San Clemente who is the son of UC Irvine men’s volleyball assistant coach Mark Presho.

Tennis duo ousted

Newport Beach residents Coco Vandeweghe and Julia Boserup were eliminated from the women’s singles draw at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, England.

Vandeweghe fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the fourth round on Sunday, after having defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy, 6-3, 6-4, in Saturday’s third round.

Boserup lost to Elena Vesnina of Russia, 7-5, 7-5, in the third round on Saturday.
