Softball: Locals named all-league

Estancia High seniors Felicia Rios and Maya Van Den Heever, as well as Costa Mesa senior Anessa Farldow and junior Brenna Alvis, earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in softball.

All four players are repeat first-team selections.

Rios, a shortstop and co-captain, hit .500 and led Estancia with 26 runs batted in. She also had four doubles, two triples and a home run to help the Eagles finished 10-13, 6-4 in league, good for third place.

The Eagles lost to visiting Moreno Valley, 10-0, in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

Van Den Heever, an outfielder, batted .458 and had 19 RBIs and a team-best nine doubles.

Farldow was a catcher and team captain for the Mustangs (10-9, 5-5 in league), who finished fourth and didn’t qualify for CIF. Farldow hit .450, and her totals of 27 RBIs and four home runs were both second on the team.

Alvis, a shortstop, hit .566, which was second on the Mustangs and in the Newport-Mesa area. She led her team with 34 runs scored, and had seven doubles and a team-best three triples in addition to her stellar defensive play. She also stole a team-best 13 bases.

Estancia sophomores Emily Kubisty and Kalena Shepherd, as well as Costa Mesa senior Jasmine Herrera and sophomore Valerie Castro, earned second-team honors.

Freshman Keana Polo of league champion Godinez earned Orange Coast League MVP honors, and her freshman teammate Arilin Ramirez was league Pitcher of the Year.

CdM’s McCrane first-team pick

Corona del Mar High sophomore pitcher Mallory McCrane received first-team All-Pacific Coast League accolades in softball.

McCrane, a transfer from Berkeley High in the Bay Area, provided a boost for CdM when she became eligible after sitting out for 30 days. She hit .412 in 11 games and led the Sea Kings with a .600 on-base percentage. In the circle, she had a 1-4 record.

CdM was 2-20, and 0-10 in league.

CdM junior Brooke Franson, who led the team with a .429 batting average including CdM’s only two home runs, earned second-team honors.

Irvine senior Jordann Utterback earned league MVP honors for the league champion Vaqueros, while Woodbridge senior Claire Boyer was the league’s Most Valuable Pitcher.

Tars’ Freeman on second team

Newport Harbor High freshman Leah Freeman earned second-team All-Sunset League honors in softball.

Freeman, who played third base, was the leadoff hitter for the Tars (10-12-1, 0-10 in league). She hit .258 with team-best totals of 24 runs and 22 steals. She walked 10 times and struck out just five times in 66 at-bats.

Newport Harbor did not have a first-team all-league selection.

Los Alamitos junior Mary Iakopo earned Sunset League MVP honors after helping the Griffins go 9-1 in league to capture the title.

Edison senior Kiana Pancino was league Pitcher of the Year, while Los Al sophomore Brianna Jewett earned Rookie of the Year accolades.
