Other acts of protest

Chapman University is no stranger to student activism.

Mary Platt, communications director at the school, who put together the history book for the campus’ 150th anniversary in 2011, found photos of student marches against the Vietnam war and for women’s rights and civil rights, the standard protests of the time.

Chapman was founded by a progressive Christian denomination, Disciples of Christ, although it is not a religious school, and the movement has long been involved in activist causes as well, she added.

A year or more ago, students led a campaign to convince campus food service to serve only eggs from cage-free chickens.

“Unfortunately, because the service uses liquid eggs in cooking, which can come from caged or non-caged sources mixed, the service wasn’t able to guarantee all cage-free eggs, but the whole eggs served are now cage-free,” Platt said. “Even President [James] Doti got behind this movement, because he raises chickens in his backyard and loves them.”
