The Segerstrom Center for the Arts will present the world premiere of American Ballet Theatre’s all-new production of “Whipped Cream,” a two-act ballet choreographed by artist in residence Alexei Ratmansky with sets and costumes by artist Mark Ryden.

The March 15-19 production, which follows a young boy who overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirium, is based on the two-act ballet with libretto and music by Richard Strauss, originally created as “Schlagobers” and performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1924.

The principal casting will feature scheduled programs that include Stella Abrera, Herman Cornejo and Daniil Simkin.

Misty Copeland is injured and unable to perform in Orange County. For the 7:30 p.m. March 17 and 1 p.m. March 19 performances of “Whipped Cream,” Princess Praline will be danced by Skylar Brandt.

The Segerstrom website describes this “full-length confection” as “a trip into a colorful world of delicious characters and dancing sweets in a whimsical blend of fantasy and surrealism.”

“Alexei’s choreography always is surprising and innovative,” said James Whitehill, American Ballet Theatre’s director of production. “The storytelling is clever and fun and will be a continued surprise, and Mark Ryden’s designs are enchanting.”

Tickets start at $29.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts is at 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. For more information, call (714) 556-2787 or visit scfta.org.
