Mailbag: Babashoff is mired in victim-think

I was very sad to read Shirley Babashoff’s story (“They took a lot away from me,” Aug. 21), and not because she lost out on four gold medals in 1976 due to doping.

I was sad because, in her own words, she can’t let it go. Instead of victim thinking, Babashoff missed the opportunity to turn a lemon into lemonade, because it’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do about it.

That is the title of a book she ought to read. The author suffered not one but two debilitating accidents — the first left him scarred from burns over 65% of his body. The other was his aircraft crashing and leaving him a paraplegic.
