Community: NCL presents annual mother-daughter event
It was a sunny kick-off for the summer. The National Charity League Glendale Ticktocker Class of 2015 chose “California Dreamin’” as the theme for the 63rd annual Mother-Daughter Awards Tea and Fashion Show held at the Pasadena Convention Center.
Outgoing President Rose Chan introduced event speakers as well as senior award winners Daisy Beckner and Alexa Rittichier. The league is indeed a California dream for mothers and daughters and the two dozen chapter philanthropies they assist, Chan said, because this year they provided more than 9,000 hours to those in need.
Chan introduced the new Ticktockers and recognized those Ticktockers who, during the past year, had gone over and above the service-hour requirements. Then 14 Ticktockers from the incoming 11th-grade class modeled fun fashions from area stores for the more than 350 guests at the event.
The girls walked the runway in brightly-colored shorts and skirts, and tropical beachwear while boys wearing Hawaiian shirts carried surfboards, tennis rackets and beach bikes.
The show culminated with the young ladies wearing evening gowns and accompanied by “dates” dressed in tuxedoes for the traditional “Prom Scene.”
In order to prepare for the complicated choreography on the runway, the girls attended training sessions with modeling professionals Nicole Stewart and Karen Buckel. The event was planned by awards tea chair Julia Kwon and her committee, and the silent auction and opportunity drawing were organized by fourth vice presidents Suzann Cooper and Kirsten Newquist.
Proceeds will be used to fund sessions at YWCA of Glendale’s Summer Day Camp for children from families receiving services through the YWCA domestic violence shelter and programs.
